#265 Ryan Bautista — Rusty, Red Bull, Balter & the Super Greens Brand Built by a Surf Industry Insider
Good Humans with Cooper ChapmanShow Notes
This week I sat down with Ryan Bautista, and this one is for anyone who has ever wondered what it looks like to build a career by following what you love.
Ryan has spent the last two decades at the intersection of surf, sport and business. He was part of the hyper growth of Rusty in Australia through the 2000s, one of the most exciting periods in Australian surf culture, before moving into athlete management with Red Bull where he worked alongside some of the biggest names in action sports. From there he moved into the WSL, helping shape the business of professional surfing, before taking his commercial skills into the craft beer world with Balter and other leading beer brands.
Now Ryan has made his most personal move yet — founding Good Street, a super greens brand built on the belief that feeling good should be simple, accessible and something you actually want to do every day.
This is a brilliant conversation about building a career in industries you love, knowing when to make the leap, and what it really takes to go from employee to founder. Ryan is switched on, generous and genuinely one of the good ones.
In this episode we cover:
Being part of the hyper growth of Rusty in Australia in the 2000s The surf industry boom and what that era taught him about business Athlete management at Red Bull and working with elite action sports talent His time at the WSL and the business of professional surfing Working with Balter and other leading beer brands Making the leap from employee to founder Building Good Street and why he started a super greens brand What it takes to launch a product brand from scratch The intersection of health, wellness and surf culture

I loved this one. Alexis has spent over a decade inside marketing, media and PR, so she knows exactly how our attention gets engineered. And she’s honest enough to call herself a tech addict too. Her new book Real: Reconnecting to Yourself in a World of Likes and Lies is three years in the making, and it’s all about how social media messes with who we think we are, and how to take that back. If you’ve ever closed an app feeling worse about yourself, this one’s for you.
This was a fascinating chat. Dr Joy Kong started out as a psychiatrist and addiction doctor before becoming one of the leading voices in stem cell therapy. She’s UCLA-trained, triple board-certified, and the founder of Chara Health in Los Angeles and the American Academy of Integrative Cell Therapy, where she trains doctors around the world. Joy cuts through the hype and tells it straight about what stem cells can and can’t do, and why she thinks we might be the first generation to reverse ageing. If you’re curious about longevity and where medicine is heading, you’ll love this one.
This week I sat down with Chris Mater, and this one is a masterclass in building a career by backing yourself at every turn.
