How Much Of The Universe Can Humanity Ever Witness?

PBS Space Time

Summary

The discussion centers on the limits of human observation of the universe and the implications of cosmic expansion. It begins with the concept of light travel, explaining that when we observe distant celestial objects, we see them as they were in the past due to the finite speed of light. The cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) serves as a crucial reference point, representing the oldest light we can detect, emitted shortly after the Big Bang. This light has traveled approximately 13.7 billion years to reach us, but due to the universe's expansion, the regions from which it originated are now much farther away.

As the conversation progresses, it delves into the concept of the particle horizon and the Hubble horizon, which define the limits of what we can observe. The Hubble horizon, currently about 14.5 billion light years away, marks the boundary where galaxies recede faster than the speed of light. However, light from beyond this horizon can still reach us due to the universe's expanding nature. The discussion highlights that while we can currently observe light from the CMB, the accelerating expansion of the universe poses a future limitation on our ability to see new cosmic events.

The episode concludes by introducing the cosmological event horizon, which represents the ultimate boundary beyond which no signals can ever reach us. This horizon is expected to shrink over time, ultimately merging with the Hubble horizon, thereby restricting our view of the universe. The conversation hints at future explorations of humanity's potential to influence and explore the cosmos, suggesting that understanding these limits is essential for contemplating our place in the universe.

There’s an absolute limit to our access to the universe beyond our own galaxy. There’s a limit to what we can ever hope to explore or send signals to, and a very different limit to what we can ever hope to witness. Today we’re going to explore the latter. We’re going to figure out the absolute limit of our future view of the universe, and of the universe’s ability to influence us. Next time we’ll turn it around and ask: how much of the external universe can WE potentially influence, and even explore?

But in fact much of our technological world depends on our understanding of the quantum properties of the subatomic universe. And soon, perhaps very soon, we’ll be interacting with the weirdness of quantum mechanics even more directly – with the coming of quantum computing and the quantum internet. Quantum computing is a topic that’s that has been well covered, so we’re going to be talking about the quantum internet. Specifically quantum cryptography and quantum key distribution – the foundations of the prospective quantum internet. We may come back to quantum computer in detail – but for now let me show you why their advent will demand a quantum internet. Subtle clues are emerging that the accepted model for the nature of dark energy and dark matter may not be all that. We saw the first such clue recently in our recent episode on the Crisis in Cosmology. Today we’re doing a Space Time Journal Club to reveal another clue. We’re looking at a new paper in Nature Astronomy, “Cosmological constraints from the Hubble diagram of quasars at high redshifts” by Risaliti and Lusso. It hints that the cosmological constant may not be so constant after all. In fact it may be increasing. If this is true, then our prediction for the future of our universe looks VERY different, and may involve the entire universe tearing itself to shreds at the subatomic level in the Big Rip.On this edition of Space Time Journal Club we look at:Risaliti and Lusso (2019) "Cosmological Constraints from the Hubble Diagram of Quasars at High Redshifts"https://www.nature.com/articles/s41550-018-0657-z#darkenergy #darkmatter #spacetimeMore about The Great Courses Plus: The Great Courses Plus is currently available to watch through a web browser to almost anyone in the world and optimized for the US, UK, and Australian markets. The very, very long story short is that the universe ends in heat death, as it approaches maximum entropy, and its eternal exponential expansion drives it to effective utter emptiness and absolute cold. But new calculations have revealed we may be able to look forward to one last source of astrophysical cataclysms - a new type of supernova that can only happen at the end of the universe. Not everything wows like gravitational waves or spacefaring sportscars. That’s the case with the recent discovery of earliest stars in the universe. In a Nature paper published a few weeks ago, Judd Bowman and collaborators report a signal from the very first stars to form in our universe. The same result also hints at brand new physics that may help explain the nature of dark matter. This result flew under the radar in part because it’s a subtle and clever result that requires a bit of interpretation. Today we’re doing a Space Time Journal Club to explain this discovery.
