Bryan Kohberger's attorney asked to remove Judge Steven Hippler from the case challenging Kohberger's own guilty plea. Before that request could be argued on October 15, the court vacated the hearing and wiped out the June 2027 dates for a status conference and possible evidence hearing. The new order leaves the recusal motion unresolved. Kohberger pleaded guilty to murdering Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin and received four consecutive life sentences. At the July 2025 plea hearing, he said under oath that he was guilty. His later petition alleges ineffective assistance from the Anne Taylor defense team and claims he did not enter the plea voluntarily. Greg Rauch, his appointed lawyer for the post-conviction challenge, argues that Hippler's sentencing remarks make him unable to judge the new petition fairly. The defense highlights the judge's description of Kohberger as a faceless coward and his decision not to postpone the trial shortly before the plea. Rauch also wants the proceeding moved back to Latah County. Prosecutors want the petition dismissed and contest the need for further hearings. The amended order gives Kohberger until January 13, 2027, to update his petition. The evidentiary timetable now continues into July, with the parties instructed to revisit hearing dates only after preliminary disputes are addressed. There has been no ruling overturning the plea and no ruling that Hippler must step aside. Alex Murdaugh's defense says DNA on Maggie Murdaugh's phone means she wasn't the last person to handle it, and a judge just let them test it. Eric Faddis joins me to break down what that could mean for the April 2027 retrial. Judge Debra McCaslin also blocked the defense from digging through ballistics files from other shootings, calling it a fishing expedition, but ordered the state to hand over its 3D crime-scene scans of Moselle. The defense can now build its own reconstruction. The judge corrected Dick Harpootlian's claim that Murdaugh passed a polygraph, saying the test he took was about hiding money and he failed it. Stoughton Police Chief Donna McNamara testified for the government at Matthew Farwell's trial while on paid leave, and both sides had already agreed not to ask her about her fight with Town Hall. Eric Faddis joins me to ask why. McNamara says Town Manager Thomas Calter ordered her to destroy a 2024 internal report on the Sandra Birchmore case. Calter flatly denies it. Her lawyer says the report holds damaging material about another former police employee. Calter has said the report deals with how the department handled the January 20, 2021 call from Sandra's friend.
