Remembering Steve Herman

Tangentially Speaking with Christopher Ryan

Show Notes

I got an email yesterday telling me that one of my favorite people, Dr. Steve Herman, had died of a sudden heart attack. Steve (a psychologist) worked with legal professionals to help them think more clearly about an issue that all too often blinds even the most level-headed among us with blind rage: allegations of sexual abuse of children. Precisely because these crimes are so offensive to people in our society, we tend to jump to conclusions, often hurting many innocent people in the process — including children. This isn't an easy thing to talk about, but Steve did it with intelligence, balance, and a deep sense of humanity. He will be missed. (Originally recorded 1/2/2015.)

Marcus grew up in a ghetto in Ohio, moved to Appalachia as a teenager, then to a houseboat among mangroves on Key West til the hurricane hit, stopped for a while in a cave outside of Crestone, and is now building a house for his family here. He’s a success story, if I’ve ever heard one. Dude is full of talent and wisdom, and he makes living in Crestone a lot richer for the rest of us.

Originally from South Africa, Spencer has lived around the world. He’s been in Japan long enough to learn the language and get real insight into the cultures. I’ve never been, but I’m fascinated by the place.
