Franziska Spritzler - 'Carbohydrate Restriction: The Key to Achieving Optimal Blood Sugar'
Low Carb Down UnderSummary
Francisca Spritzler, a registered dietitian and certified diabetes educator, shares her journey from following a traditional high-carb diet to adopting a low-carbohydrate approach after discovering concerning blood sugar levels during a life insurance health assessment. Despite adhering to the dietary guidelines she recommended to her patients, her blood glucose readings indicated spikes after meals, prompting her to reevaluate her dietary practices.
Through personal experimentation and research, Spritzler finds that reducing carbohydrate intake significantly improves her blood sugar control. She notes that many individuals with diabetes experience better outcomes when following low-carb diets, a shift that is gradually being recognized by the American Diabetes Association. Although some healthcare professionals remain skeptical, Spritzler advocates for evidence-based discussions and the sharing of success stories to encourage more dietitians to consider low-carb options for diabetes management. She emphasizes the importance of focusing on nutrient-dense whole foods rather than processed low-carb products to achieve sustainable health benefits.

Franziska Spritzler, RD, CDE, is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator who favours a low-carbohydrate approach for diabetes and weight management. For several years she consumed the same low-fat, high-carbohydrate eating plan she recommended for the patients she counselled as an outpatient dietitian in a large teaching hospital.Once she discovered in early 2011 that her own blood sugar levels were increasing to unhealthy levels after eating, Franziska began researching the beneficial effects of carbohydrate restriction and adopted it as her way of eating. She now recommends low-carbohydrate diets for people with all types of diabetes, as well as for individuals insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, and those who have difficulty losing weight with low-fat diets. She is the author of "A Low-Carbohydrate, Whole-Foods Approach to Managing Diabetes and Prediabetes," featured in the Winter 2013 edition of the American Diabetes Association's Diabetes Spectrum journal. Dr. Jessica Turton is the Director of Ellipse Health and holds a PhD in nutrition awarded by the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney. Her thesis investigated the use and efficacy of low-carbohydrate diets for diabetes management, with a specific focus on type 1 diabetes. Dr. Turton conducted a clinical trial in collaboration with the CSIRO using a fully online delivery model which enabled Australia-wide participation. The aim of the study was to assess the safety and effect(s) of a nutritionally adequate low-carbohydrate diet on type 1 diabetes management outcomes.Jessica has also co-authored several research articles in leading scientific journals, including "An Evidence-based Approach to Developing Low-carbohydrate Diets in Type 2 Diabetes: A Systematic Review" in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism. Jessica was invited to speak at the American Diabetes Associated Conference in June 2020 to present the evidence for low-carbohydrate diets and nutritional ketosis in the treatment of diabetes and obesity.Jessica has a passion for working with individuals to identify the primary nutritional problems affecting their health and preventing them from reaching their goals. She was the recipient of the Charles Perkins Centre Summer Research Scholarship in 2016/17 where she was part of a team that conducted analyses to investigate the association of industry-funding and results in published studies examining the effect of whole-grain intake for cardiovascular disease prevention. Please consider supporting Low Carb Down Under via Patreon. Ivor Cummins originally completed a Chemical Engineering degree in 1990 (Biochemical Stream, BE(Chem) CEng MIEI), followed by over 25 years in corporate technical leadership and management positions. Ivor’s particular specialty was leading teams in complex problem-solving scenarios.Following less-than-ideal blood test results, he was unable to get solutions from the doctors he consulted. He thus embarked on an intense period of biochemical research into the science of human metabolism. Ivor intensively studied the mechanisms and primary drivers of elevated GGT and Serum Ferritin. This quickly led to an investigation of general causes of inflammation and dyslipidemia.Within eight weeks Ivor had resolved and optimised all of his blood test metrics. Also, he had shed nearly 15kg of body fat with relative ease. As the journey became a fixation he went on to analyse over 200 related papers and studies carried out over the past 5 decades and before.Ivor found that the value of the technical expertise gained during his career to be of paramount importance in this odyssey. Through this investigation Ivor has realised that to be successful in determining root cause and solution in the health arena requires far more than a general medical background. In the following years Ivor has continued his research on the many “root causes” of modern disease, from “cholesterol” through to insulin resistance. He has also given many public talks and chaired interviews with various health experts.A .PDF version of the slides used in this presentation is available here; http://denversdietdoctor.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/Ivor-Cummins-The-Pathways-of-Insulin-Resistance-Exposure-and-Implications.pdf Learn more about your ad choices.
