EPISODE 111 — Blur — The NFT Marketplace Taking on OpenSea

OpenSea had operated as the dominant NFT marketplace for years — the platform where Bored Apes, CryptoPunks, and thousands of other collections were bought and sold. When Blur launched in October 2022, most observers assumed it would be a minor competitor in OpenSea's shadow. Within five months, Blur had surpassed OpenSea in trading volume. The disruption was built on three foundations: zero marketplace fees versus OpenSea's 2.5%, professional trading tools that active traders had been demanding for years, and one of the most carefully engineered airdrop strategies in NFT history — converting the highest-value traders from every competing platform simultaneously.

In this episode of Crypto for Beginners, we tell the full Blur story. We explain what Blur built that OpenSea did not: batch buying for sweeping an entire floor of a collection in a single transaction, real-time portfolio analytics, advanced filtering and sorting tools, and marketplace aggregation pulling listings from OpenSea, LooksRare, and other venues. We walk through the BLUR token airdrop mechanics in detail: how the retroactive reward system used "care packages" to incentivise traders to consolidate activity on Blur before the snapshot, what the distributions actually looked like, and why early recipients benefited most from the February 2023 launch.

We explain Blend — Blur's NFT lending protocol — in full: how holders can borrow ETH against their NFT collateral with no fixed repayment terms or expiry dates, what the liquidation mechanism looks like, and why this was a genuine financial innovation for an asset class that had previously been entirely illiquid. We cover the royalty debate Blur triggered by making creator royalties optional rather than mandatory — how this changed creator economics across the entire NFT market. We then cover the 2026 reality: BLUR token down over 99% from peak, NFT volumes far below 2022 highs, but Blur maintaining its position as the platform for professional traders and Blend continuing to process significant loan volume.
