Ep 65: The Newark Rental Car Walk from Hell , Philly Food Showdown, and Aaron Rai’s Iron Covers
Quiet Please! With Mel and KiraShow Notes
On this episode of Quiet Please, Kira and Mel recap Aaron Rai’s PGA Championship win, and reveal the real reason he uses iron covers. They discuss the course setup, complaints about difficulty and pin positions, and Jon Rahm’s encouraging major performance, along with Alex Smalley’s near-breakthrough and his mom filming every shot for data. They touch on Bryson DeChambeau’s missed cut, content-vs-competition balance, and his unique equipment choices. Beyond the major, they spotlight Leona Harm’s LET win in Germany, Lottie Woad’s LPGA win, and some major complaints about airport transportation.

More from Quiet Please! With Mel and Kira
Kira and Mel welcome LPGA star Sarah Schmelzel as their “third yapper,” joke about mask-chain memories, then trace how she went from gymnastics, figure skating, and family golf to the Epson Tour and LPGA. Sarah details a 15-year battle with endometriosis and adenomyosis, taking time off, and easing back into golf with her team. They debate Solheim Cup vs. individual wins and close with “shush of the week” rants about lung capacity, TV packs, and everyone being too loud. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Mel runs a solo Q&A with all your usable questions. Mel gives her practical advice for amateurs, reflects on her top Solheim Cup memories, and weighs in on Suzann Pettersen competing again. Also, she explains what she misses (and doesn’t miss) about the tour grind, and the golf rule she would change. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Kira and a travel-worn Mel catch up as Kira nears motherhood and is fully in nesting mode. Mel recaps working Golf Channel’s LPGA coverage of the Lotte Championship and Jeeno’s fourth win of the year, plus a hit take on the LPGA’s should fix Aon Risk Reward program. They celebrate Tom Kim winning Asian Games gold, laugh at Matt Fitzpatrick’s mystery congratulatory texter, and shout out Austin Smotherman’s first PGA Tour win. There’s also a deep discussion on former club outfits. (Night clubs, not golf clubs) See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Mel’s voice is hanging by a thread as she and Kira unpack the pressure-packed finish to the President’s Cup and why the Americans are just so good at singles. Mel is back at work with the LPGA, and Kira and Mel get into the week in Arkansas and the ongoing marketing struggles the LPGA faces. They also dig into the promise of WTGL, did the USA WAGS have Birkins (an investigative report), and Kira’s home stretch as she awaits Baby’s arrival. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Mel’s voice returns for just long enough to get through a “proper Jersey wedding” and today’s pod. Mel and Kira review the President’s Cup rosters, reflect on the Solheim Cup TV ratings and the brutal LPGA end-of-season travel schedule. Kira shushes unsolicited pregnancy comments, among many (many) other things. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
