#102: Spider Hickman - Common Knowledge - Using What We Have

The Earthly Delights Podcast

Show Notes

It’s easy to forget that we once had the skills, resources and sense of community to feel confident in addressing these kinds of challenges – perhaps easier to believe that we have lost them forever. Common Knowledge is a non-profit organisation, based in Co. Clare committed to helping people familiarise themselves with such skills while empowering the community to play a more hands-on role in their living arrangements. Spider Hickman is a Co-founder of Common Knowledge and programme director. Originally thinking that architecture was her path, she diverted to contemporary art, then residential development before finding her happy place back on site, this time with tools in hand. As well as teaching as part of our core crew, Spider manages course development and communications. This conversation covers Spider's journey (which is a real journey) to ending up with Common Knowledge, what exactly Common Knowledge do, to Tiny houses - I'm confident I'm not the only one that has considered a Tiny Home over the last few years. We also spend some time reflecting on the collective shift towards wanting a sustainable living situation that we can contribute towards. As someone who is far from handy, this served as an uplifting and inspiring discussion which reshaped my belief on what I could do, in the midst of a cost of living and housing crisis to aid my living situation. I truly hope it does the same for you. Common Knowledge is running courses almost non-stop over the next 5 months or so. Please see the link below for more information about their courses and dates etc also, if you are somewhat handy interested in volunteering with the guys, please drop them an email which you'll find through the link below. https://www.ourcommonknowledge.org/volunteering Sign up to our Patreon here: https://www.patreon.com/earthlydelightspod

Eamon Armstrong is an artist, podcaster, and as of this month, a published author. I’ve invited him onto the podcast because he’s a very deep, kind and relatable person. His journey towards self-connection and authenticity is very inspirational. I initially reached out to him after I listened to his podcast on the topic of an Inspirational Masculinity for the left which I felt uplifting and nourishing. After I reached out, he kindly sent me his memoir “Many- Minded Man” which I read in a week. This lengthy conversation begins around masculinity, the manosphere, Clavicular, Bad Bunny and then moves into some of the key areas of his memoir, namely; his problematic relationship to porn, its detrimental consequences on his sex life and his voyage towards self-compassion and sexually thriving through the help of kink and other resources. We also explore the role of psychedelics and men’s work in Eamon’s personal growth as well his exploration and embracing of more feminine parts of him. Shout out to Aim! His memoir is out now and I would highly recommend it to anyone. If interested, you can preorder the book here- https://www.eamonarmstrong.com

Our guest this episode is Tatiana Fyodorov, creator of Deep Chats. Deep Chats is a community where people have...you guessed it...DEEP CHATS! It's a space where people feel open and comfortable enough to talk to absolute strangers about real, nuanced topics that create real connections. Tatiana talks to us about her upbringing and how it shaped her into being the type of person who isn't overly interested in small talk, but wants to get to know the real you immediately, and why this urge ultimately led her to create Deep Chats. Thanks for listening! You can follow on IG here: https://www.instagram.com/deepchatsx/

Our guest is Tom Hopcroft, founder of the "Guiris de Mierda" community. Seb talks to Tom about his unconventional path to Madrid, Spain, and how slowly but surely he went from being a primary school teacher teaching English to creating his own community, hosting events in various cities in Spain, allowing people to connect and create their own community, something he himself was missing at the time. We talk about the idea of shame and fear holding you back, and once you rid yourself of those shackles, as Tom has so clearly done, you are free to live the life you want to! Find more about him here: https://www.instagram.com/tomcharliedesign/ https://www.instagram.com/guirisdemierda/ Thanks to Tom for making time, and thanks to you all for listening.

Rob Doyle is an Irish author of four internationally acclaimed books: Threshold, This Is the Ritual, Here Are the Young Men, which has been adapted for film, and his recently published Cameo. He has written for The New York Times, The Guardian, The Irish Times, to name a few. He was one of the first guests on the Earthly Delights Podcast back in 2020, yes, 6 years ago, and I was very grateful to sit down with him again and explore several themes that arise in his new book, Cameo, and his recent writing elsewhere. Rob has a gift for exploring the shadow of society through his work while also illuminating some of the most beautiful experiences of humanity. In this chat, we unpack weighty topics such as lust, post-psychedelic appreciation of religion and spirituality, addiction, as well as one of my favourite questions: what do we do with beauty? Cameo is incredible, and I’d highly recommend anyone who’s a little intrigued to grab a copy. If you want to stay connected to Rob, check out his Insta and Substack below: https://www.instagram.com/skullhotel/ https://substack.com/@robdoyle Thanks to Rob for making time, and thanks to you all for listening.
