The Wilder Ride

TWR Listeners Lounge - Mike White

The Wilder Ride

Show Notes

In this episode, Alan and Walt sit down with former Alabama football player, Navy Seal, Actor, body guard and now businessman, Mike White. The conversation opens with a discussion of how Mike was recruited to play for the University of Alabama. During college, he never thought about a career in the military. He admits the irony in being an English major in school, more interested in Chaucer than anything more concrete. But, Mike believes in effective communication and a robust vocabulary. A chance look at a magazine is what sent him to the US Navy, where he became a Navy Seal. Some time is spent discussing the intense training and teamwork to make the Seal team. After serving his time, Mike White started to get into acting. His physical size and abilities got him roles on several television shows and films. After four years, he had the chance to perform security for Bill and Melinda Gates. After that, he became head of security for Bruce Springsteen for a year. Mike recounts one particular story about how the "Boss" nearly got pulled out of a van on the way to the airport. We end the interview segment with where Mike White is today. He believes each and every move in his path led him to the job he has today. After the interview, Walt reviews the horrible movie selected by our listeners. Then Alan and Walt each share a couple of crazy news items. The two wrap-up with the entertainment segment. WATCHING Alan is working his way through season one of ST:TOS (remastered) and commented about how good, "The Balance of Terror," was so far. Alan and his wife are also onto season 4 of The Good Place. Walt was turned on to a pair of documentaries he recommends. The first is, Murder Among the Mormons. The other is called, The Ripper. READING Alan has been buried in the news with all the additional radio work he was doing. Walt is about a third of the way through the book, "Running with the Devil," by Noel E. Monk. LISTENING Alan highly recommends episode 344 of the 60MW Podcast entitled, "Re-looking at Music Videos Part 2 (remastered)" with visual conceptualist Keith Williams as the guest. Walt is listening to Gangster House, talking about how an FBI top 10 most wanted was taking up residence in his neighborhood when he was a kid. The other is The Dirty Harry Minute. Walt was part of a live, real-time discussion about the film Sudden Impact. The audio of that session was just published.

Every year on WBHF Radio in NW Georgia, three of us get together for a special Halloween show. Fellow broadcaster, Barry King, aka BK, from his show "BK on the Air," fellow podcaster and my co-host on "The Wilder Ride", Walt Murray and I bring the audience our own special brand of trick-or-treating. Consider this a BONUS show and will have absolutely nothing to do with news or politics. What I do think you'll get in a lot of laughs, a healthy dose of inuendo, and lots and lots of Halloween related topics. For example, we will talk about our five least favorite Halloween candies; a couple of movies we were told would scare the pants off of us, but turned out to be complete duds; each of our top five scariest movie posters; and, our top five list of movies that we each think are scary, but you may have really never heard of them -- we called it, "Not your run of the kill movie list." Throughout the show, we talked with several listeners, talked about Halloween traditions and how it's changed over the years and even included a radio-theatre short story written by Chris Frew, who penned the tale just for the show. It's a lot of fun and we hope you enjoy reliving our 9th Annual Halloween Spooktacular.

In this episode, hosts Alan Sanders and Walt Murray sit down for a chat with the host of the Von Haessler Doctrine, Eric Von Haessler. Although the goal was to start at the beginning, the discussion took on a life of it's own. Rather than the usual trip down memory lane, Alan and Walt spent time chatting with Eric about our current cultural state. It's impossible to know the fullest extent of social media and the internet, but it's hard to ignore the impact on society. From celebrities to politicians, becoming and influencer is akin to the accumulation of power. It's no longer about the will of the people or the Founding Fathers. Rather, it's about popularity and likes, follows, and retweets. This discussion eventually does turn to the creation of The Von Haessler Doctrine. Eric spends time talking about his evolution from The Regular Guys to 911 to losing his job. But, after years of struggling to stay relevent, working on a daily podcast, the opportunity arose to return to the airwaves with a brand new show. Since then, Eric has never looked back, focused squarely on the future of his show and, concurrently, on the future of our great Republic. After the interview, Eric hangs out as Alan and Walt dive into some strange news items, weighing in on them with his own brand of humor. Then, to wrap up the show, all three dive into the entertainment segment where they discuss what they've been watching, reading and listening to over the past week. WATCHING Walt has been diving into season 3 of Lost in Space. He also re-watching We Were Soldiers with Mel Gibson and the documentary The Pacific. Alan continues to give The Wheel of Time a chance, but even after five episodes, he is dubious. He loves the Disney+ series, Hawkeye, which is on episode 3. With the holidays upon us, Alan also watched Die Hard. He then revisited Enders Game, streaming in 4K. He loves watching the YouTube channels, Ashleigh Burton, Popcorn in Bed and The TRY Channel. Eric is starting on the new seasons of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and The Expanse. He also loved the new documentary, Get Back, on Disney+. READING Walt is finishing, "Killing the Mob,'" and is next set to read, "Killing LIncoln.." Alan has completed, "Dune." Eric has been into, "2666," and, "The Savage Detectives," by Roberto Belano. Eric is also deep into the science book, "The Big Picture," by Sean M. Carroll. LISTENING Walt continues to listen to the Radio Labyrinth podcast. He also just listened to the most recent episode of the WTF with Mark Maron interviewing guest, Benedict Cumberbatch. He also was on The Dirty Harry Minute discussing the film, Sudden Impact. Alan never misses new episodes of the 60MW Podcast, The Time Bandits Minute and continues to listen to a ton of Christmas music. Eric has been listening to the Beatles catalog and any shows that have to do with whether or not Shakespeare really wrote those plays.
