The Unused Subs

Show Notes

It's all happening in this week's episode of The Unused Subs! Iffy is at Sydney Airport awaiting a flight to London, Jacob frantically drives from NZCIS to Wellington to join the call, while Goran is in the company of the returning OLI SAIL at Tyler St Sport... and for the first time on the bench it's former Premier League goalkeeper JONATHAN GOULD!

First things first: what's happening with Auckland FC? They lost at home to Central Coast Mariners, and with that defeat they relinquish their grasp on the A-League's Premiers Plate. Gouldy and Oli explain what the problems have been lately, and how they will address those issues in an all-important clash with Sydney FC this Sunday. Win and they're straight into the semifinals!

Gouldy tells us about his experiences with Coventry City in the Premier League, including a man of the match performance in his debut against Liverpool! His best moments, his worst injuries... And what happened in the tunnel before his Scotland played the might of Brazil in the FIFA World Cup of 1998?

Elsewhere we test the brand new McDonald's Pickle Juice! Does it go down smooth? And ALEX RUFER is our man to step up to the 10 Ball Challenge... great expectations on the Wellington Phoenix skipper!

Would 'limb lengthening' have made Jacob a better goalie? And finally... is Jonathan Gould ACTUALLY Oli Sail's dad??

On the surface, a solitary goal in extra time doesn't sound overly impressive or convincing, but dig a little deeper and you will see that this was not only a one-sided finale, but one of the most dominant World Cup campaigns, ever.

England has been defeated by Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup Semifinals. And of course, the finger of blame is pointing directly at England's manager Thomas Tuchel. Were his defensive tactics in the final half hour of the clash 'cowardly' as has been reported in the UK media since the 2-1 loss?
