TERRIFYING - Airbus A380 engine explodes after Takeoff! Qantas 32

Green Dot Aviation

Summary

On November 4, 2010, a Qantas Airways Airbus A380 experienced a catastrophic engine failure shortly after takeoff from Singapore, putting the lives of 440 passengers and 29 crew members at risk. The incident began when engine number two exploded, sending shrapnel through the aircraft's fuselage and severing critical electrical and hydraulic systems. Despite the chaos, the flight crew, led by Captain Richard de Crepney, maintained composure and began troubleshooting the extensive damage while circling over the ocean.

As the pilots assessed the situation, they discovered that not only was engine number two inoperable, but the remaining engines were also showing signs of malfunction. The crew faced a dilemma: return to Singapore immediately or spend time diagnosing the aircraft's issues. Ultimately, they opted to gather more information while remaining within gliding distance of the airport. After an hour of troubleshooting, they determined they were 50 tons overweight for landing and had to calculate their stopping distance under precarious conditions.

The crew executed a tense landing, touching down just 150 meters from the runway's end. However, the situation remained critical as fuel continued to leak from the damaged wing, and one engine was still running. The pilots decided to keep passengers on board until it was safe to evacuate, and emergency services were alerted. Remarkably, all passengers and crew members emerged unscathed, a testament to the pilots' exceptional airmanship and teamwork during an unprecedented emergency.

Investigations revealed that the engine failure was caused by a manufacturing defect in a pipe, leading to an uncontained engine failure. Following the incident, inspections were mandated for similar engines, resulting in the removal of 53 engines from service. The aircraft was repaired at a cost of $145 million and continues to operate with Qantas today.
