Most people think of chronic illness as something caused by a specific trigger…an infection, a toxin, or even an autoimmune reaction. And the solution is to find and eliminate that one thing. But what if that's not how it actually works? Today, I'm excited to have Dr. Eric Gordon back on the podcast. He's built a reputation for doing what most doctors won't, which is looking beyond the diagnosis to find what's actually driving a patient's illness and figuring out the right order to address it. His clinical work spans Lyme disease, ME/CFS, autoimmune conditions, and mitochondrial dysfunction, and many other forms of dysfunction, often all at once in the same patient. In 2016, he co-authored a landmark study with Dr. Robert Naviaux, also a former guest on this podcast and a bit of a personal hero of mine, someone who has done some of the most important work in medicine of the last century, with his work on the cell danger response. In Dr. Gordon's view, chronic illness happens when the body's normal healing cycle gets interrupted and stuck in a persistent inflammatory state. From that perspective, the problem isn't just the original trigger. It's the state your body has shifted into. And if that's true, it changes how you approach treatment. That shift in thinking opens the door to very different kinds of interventions. These approaches focus on changing the broader biological environment rather than chasing a single cause. In this episode, Dr. Gordon and I discuss a therapy that filters and replaces part of your blood plasma and may help remove inflammatory factors circulating in the blood that keep the body stuck. In this podcast, Dr. Eric Gordon and I discuss: Why chronic illness often reflects a body stuck in the wrong healing state; compensations the body makes for stressors are designed to be short-term, not chronic
What happens when the body's normal repair cycle gets interrupted
Why the body's response, not the original trigger, can keep people sick
The surprising role of "old information" in ongoing dysfunction
Why trying to fix one problem at a time often falls short in people with overlapping conditions
Dr. Gordon explains why treating the body as a machine will never work - biological reductionism is the fundamental error
How a fascinating intervention called plasmapheresis works to filter and replace blood plasma and lower inflammatory load
Why plasmapheresis is gaining attention in chronic illness and longevity
Dr. Gordon's belief that medicine is faulty because it's hooked on specificity, that the more we can do exactly what we want, the better…but this approach is lacking because we don't know exactly how our bodies work

Dr. Keith Scott-Mumby has been pioneering food allergy research since 1985, back when doctors called him a quack. Today, he's recognized as one of the world's leading experts in identifying hidden food intolerances that sabotage your health and energy.
We're living in a paradoxical moment. Technology promises to elevate us, yet we're more disconnected from our bodies than ever. Master Mingtong Gu, a Qigong master and author of Coming Home to Embodied Awakening, shares a radical insight: our humanity isn't defined by our thinking. Rather, it's defined by our capacity to feel, experience, and inhabit our bodies. In a world hijacked by screens, data, and AI, Master Mingtong reveals why returning to your body is an act of resistance and reclamation. He's spent decades teaching thousands of people how to recover from "incurable" conditions and discover profound peace by reconnecting with their physical existence. This conversation challenges everything you think you know about spirituality, health, and what it means to be truly human in the 2020s. If you've ever felt lost in your own mind, this episode is for you.
Are you experiencing symptoms like your mind feeling cloudy, forgetting basic things, and constantly struggling to stay focused on the task at hand? If so, there is a likely chance that you suffer from brain fog. In itself, brain fog can be frustrating as it keeps you from living your optimal life. However, it could be a sign of underlying issues. In order to improve your brain health, it is critical to first uncover the primary causes of brain fog. You will learn all this and more as I talk to health journalist Jordan Fallis, the founder of Optimal Living Dynamics. Jordan's passion for treating brain fog and improving brain health started out when he, after a series of unfortunate events, ended up suffering from brain fog and sought ways to treat it. In this episode, Jordan shares his knowledge on the root causes of brain fog and the simple yet powerful steps you can take today to optimize your brain health.
I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Stephan Guyenet, an obesity researcher with a Ph.D. in neuroscience who spent 12 years studying the science of body fatness. His groundbreaking work has completely changed how I think about fat loss and nutrition science. This conversation is one I've been looking forward to for years. Dr. Guyenet challenges one of the most popular narratives in health today: that carbs and insulin are the primary drivers of fat gain. We dive deep into the scientific evidence that contradicts this widely-believed hypothesis, and it's eye-opening. If you've ever wondered why the low-carb movement became so dominant despite conflicting research, this episode will give you answers. In this podcast, Dr. Guyenet and I discuss: Why the carbohydrate-insulin hypothesis of obesity doesn't hold up to scientific scrutiny
My good friend Jason Prall has one of the smartest minds I know in the health space. He's a filmmaker, author, and health educator who created The Human Longevity Project, a nine-part film series that's honestly one of my favorite health documentaries of all time. In this conversation, we dive deep into something most people miss: how your childhood experiences and emotional traumas directly impact your energy levels and physical health. We explore the ACE study, intergenerational trauma, and how your nervous system is either working for you or against you. Jason shares how the beliefs and patterns you developed as a child are still running in the background of your life, draining your energy and keeping you stuck in fight-or-flight mode. But there is good news: once you understand this, you can change it. Jason walks through practical tools you can use today to shift your nervous system, heal your attachment patterns, and start extracting energy from your environment more efficiently, whether you're dealing with chronic fatigue, anxiety, or just feeling stuck. In this podcast, Jason and I discuss: How your body extracts energy from the environment and why most people are wasting theirs • The ACE study and why childhood experiences predict adult disease better than genetics How micro-traumas and perfectionism create invisible patterns that sabotage your health The polyvagal theory and the three nervous system states that determine your energy levels Why you might be stuck in freeze mode and how to recognize it The connection between your beliefs, your nervous system, and your mitochondrial function Practical breathwork techniques to shift from sympathetic overdrive to parasympathetic rest How attachment styles formed in childhood are keeping you from connection and healing The power of intention, meditation, and - amazingly - biophotons in optimizing your energy Why disease is actually your greatest teacher and how to become grateful for your symptoms
