The Sabbath and Covid: What is the Connection? | Fr. Chris Alar, MIC

Homilies from the National Shrine

Show Notes

Fr. Chris Alar, MIC, reminds us that Jesus Himself fulfilled the law of the Sabbath and established its deeper meaning—not the Catholic Church. Jesus taught that the Sabbath was made for humanity, not humanity for the Sabbath (Mark 2:27). When He healed on the Sabbath, He challenged religious leaders who placed strict observance of rules above compassion, mercy, and human dignity. He exposed their hypocrisy because they had forgotten the purpose of God's law: to bring people closer to Him through love, healing, and mercy. God's mercy does not rest on the Sabbath; it is available every day. Human regulations must never take precedence over God's commandment to love our neighbor. This teaching invites reflection on the COVID-19 pandemic, when restrictions, social distancing, isolation, and church closures created profound spiritual and emotional suffering. These policies "Law" raised serious questions about loneliness, mental health, access to worship, and whether compassion was sometimes overshadowed by rigid policies. The Sabbath reminds us that rules should serve human well-being, never become more important than the people they protect.

What makes a life truly meaningful? Is it worldly success, recognition, or the souls we help bring to Jesus Christ? Inspired by the spiritual teachings of Fr. Daniel Klimek, this powerful reflection challenges priests, bishops, and every Christian to rediscover their sacred mission: the salvation of souls. The Christian life is a spiritual battle between the Kingdom of Light and the kingdom of darkness. Priests are called by God to be courageous spiritual warriors, defenders of divine truth, and shepherds who lead souls to heaven. Through prayer, sacrifice, the sacraments, and fidelity to Christ, countless souls trapped in mortal sin can receive the grace of conversion. The urgent question remains: How many souls are you helping to save today?

Fr. Tyler Mentzer, MIC, reminds us of the importance of recognizing the signs of the times and preparing our hearts for the coming of Jesus Christ. Before coming as the Just Judge, Jesus offers His mercy to the world, inviting everyone to repentance, conversion, and salvation. Just as people can interpret the signs of nature and predict changes in the weather, we are also called to recognize the spiritual signs of our times and understand what God is asking of us. His message is clear: repent, believe in the Gospel, and turn to God's mercy while there is still time. We must not rely on our own strength or attempt to save ourselves, because only God can grant us the gift of eternal life.

In this inspiring teaching, Fr. David Gunter, MIC, reflects on the profound Marian devotion of St. John Paul II, a great apostle of Divine Mercy whose pontificate touched countless lives. Inspired by St. Louis de Montfort, John Paul II embraced the words Totus Tuus—“Totally Yours”—expressing his complete entrustment to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Through his extraordinary love for Our Lady, we discover the beauty of Mary's Immaculate Conception and her unique role in God's plan of salvation. Just as Jesus is the New Adam who conquers Satan, Mary is the New Eve, full of grace, preserved from original sin, and perfectly obedient to God. Unlike Eve, who was deceived, Mary remained faithful, surrendering herself completely to the Father's will.

Fr. Daniel Klimek reminds us that God will judge each person according to the knowledge, grace, and responsibilities they have received. As Catholics, we have been entrusted with an extraordinary treasure: the fullness of the Catholic faith, the teachings of Christ, the Gospel, and the gift of the Holy Eucharist. We know our Master's will, and with that knowledge comes greater accountability. Jesus teaches that those who know God's will but fail to follow it will face a more serious judgment than those who act in ignorance. Our Catholic faith is not simply a privilege to celebrate but a sacred responsibility to live faithfully, humbly, and gratefully.

In his powerful Tuesday reflection, Fr. Scott Foley, MIC, draws from the writings of St. Faustina Kowalska to remind us of a profound truth: God’s mercy is always greater than our misery. Jesus invites us to trust in Him, saying that if we struggle to believe His words, we should believe in His wounds—the ultimate testimony of His love. God became man so that He could suffer and die for our salvation. Each of us possesses a unique, immortal soul, created for eternity. God desires everyone to be with Him in Heaven, yet He respects our freedom to choose. St. Faustina’s testimony reminds us that hell is real, and the devil seeks to deceive us into denying the eternal consequences of our choices. The question we must ask ourselves is: Am I ready to meet the Lord today?
