Stage or Suicide? Dissecting the Crime Scene Artifacts in Sandra Birchmore’s Death
The Murder Of Sandra BirchmoreShow Notes
The scene inside Sandra Birchmore's apartment doesn't match the defense's version. A fractured hyoid bone — an injury with no documented parallels in the position the defense describes. A severe chest imprint. Glasses placed neatly on the bed. A locked door. And a digital trail running in the opposite direction of someone giving up: baby gear purchases, prenatal vitamin searches, all from the same day prosecutors allege Farwell killed her. The FBI found over 32,000 texts on Farwell's phone that state police missed entirely. His DNA was the major contributor on the ligature. The paternity confirmed the baby was his. Prosecutors allege the pregnancy was the trigger — the moment his marriage and badge were both over. The defense has signaled biomechanical experts to challenge the autopsy and a focus on gaps in the building surveillance. But the autopsy, the DNA, and the digital evidence all converge on the same story. The defense has to undo all of it. More from The Murder Of Sandra Birchmore
Sandra was twelve or thirteen years old when Stoughton's police explorer program placed her in a room with adult officers who had unchecked access to vulnerable minors. There were no meaningful background checks. No oversight. Multiple officers allegedly used that access for years. Matthew Farwell is the only one facing federal charges, and those charges are for murder — not for what allegedly happened to Sandra starting when she was a child. Robert Devine and William Farwell have been named in the broader pattern of alleged conduct. Neither has been federally indicted. When Sandra died, Farwell wasn't treated as a suspect by local investigators. He wasn't put on camera. The case was closed as self-inflicted without a warrant. The FBI took over because local law enforcement protected its own. The same DA's office appears in the Karen Read case. If Farwell is convicted, the accountability question starts — not ends — with him. The program that gave officers access to Sandra still existed when she died. In her final therapy session, on January 31st, 2021, Sandra Birchmore described a visit from her mother, who had died in 2016. Therapist Diala Alkhalil told the jury in the Matthew Farwell trial on October 23rd that it frightened Sandra, and that it came up after Sandra said she feared for her safety in her Canton apartment. Prosecutors say Farwell strangled Sandra there the next day to keep her from reporting him to federal investigators, and Farwell has pleaded not guilty. Alkhalil said she screened Sandra for suicidal thoughts every session and never heard one, and that she had to call the State Police herself. Friend Lindsey Crean said the pregnancy made Sandra happier than she'd been since her mother died. Defense lawyer Joanne Daley's last questions of the day were about that visit, including whether it was a hallucination. Alkhalil is back on the stand Monday, October 26th. Federal prosecutors say Matthew Farwell’s DNA was found on the duffel-bag strap involved in Sandra Birchmore’s death. That forensic claim sits alongside surveillance footage showing his visit to her building and evidence of messages that disappeared from the phone originally examined by state investigators. Farwell’s defense says he visited Sandra to end their relationship and that she took her own life afterward. Former prosecutor Eric Faddis examines which portions of the government’s evidence most directly challenge that account and which still require interpretation. A DNA finding can establish contact with an object without independently fixing when the contact happened. The combined conversation also turns to a separate Stoughton dispute. Chief Donna McNamara alleges Town Manager Thomas Calter told her to destroy a second internal report relating to the Birchmore matter. Calter denies it. What the report contains and whether it bears on Farwell’s trial should not be assumed from the allegation alone. Sandra’s plans for motherhood, Farwell’s masked appearance in the building footage, and the original state investigation all shape the story the jury is hearing. Farwell has pleaded not guilty. The case asks jurors to decide what the evidence proves while the town faces a different question about transparency. Matthew Farwell was questioned about Sandra Birchmore’s death in a school parking lot. Trooper Matthew Dunne told a federal jury the conversation was not recorded and no notes were taken. He said the decision was tactical and attributed those interview choices to case supervisor Sgt. John Fanning. Investigators hoped to secure an account without causing Farwell to end the interview. Farwell acknowledged going to Sandra’s apartment but described a breakup visit. Dunne later testified that aspects of Farwell’s account of the relationship were misleading. With no recording, jurors cannot hear precisely how the questions were asked or answers delivered. Criminal defense attorney Bob Motta examines what investigators gain from an informal interview and what they lose when a key conversation cannot be replayed. Former prosecutor Eric Faddis considers the separate failures alleged around digital evidence, the police department, and the first classification of Sandra’s death. The FBI’s later recovery of communications added another layer for jurors to weigh. Federal prosecutors say Farwell killed Sandra; his defense maintains she took her own life. The original investigators did not have to decide guilt, but they did have to collect and preserve evidence. How should a jury evaluate an investigation that left its most important interview without a recording? A friend contacted the Stoughton Police Department in January 2021 with concerns about Sandra Birchmore and an officer. Federal prosecutors allege that a department employee relayed information about that warning to Matthew Farwell. The indictment does not identify his twin brother William as the person who passed it along. William Farwell also worked for Stoughton police and later lost his law-enforcement certification. A separate departmental inquiry identified misconduct involving multiple officers connected to Sandra. Criminal defense attorney Bob Motta examines why a complaint involving a police officer should have been handled independently, rather than reaching the subject of the allegation. That institutional question now reaches town leadership. Chief Donna McNamara alleges that Town Manager Thomas Calter directed her to destroy a second investigative report. Calter denies giving such an instruction. The report’s full contents have not been established in the public record, and the disagreement is the subject of a separate dispute. Psychotherapist Shavaun Scott considers why organizations sometimes resist scrutiny when misconduct is reported inside their own ranks. The federal prosecution accuses Matthew Farwell of killing Sandra and staging her death; he has pleaded not guilty. The unanswered question is who handled Sandra’s warning and why the information moved as it did.
