Flynn Told Botner WHAT After Ashley Was Found and She Kept His Secret
American Monster: The Trial Of Caleb FlynnShow Notes
Seven hours on the stand. Thirty-four binders. More than a hundred and seven thousand messages between Flynn and Botner — and the one thing she testified to that prosecutors didn't have to script. Alleigha Botner described every stage of the relationship in the Caleb Flynn murder trial: the church internship at Christian Life Center in Butler Township, the physical turn in May 2024, the three hundred daily messages, the matching lightning bolt tattoos, the names they both called Ashley. She described months of messages where Flynn allegedly talked about wanting his wife gone — including one about staying up until 4 a.m. working through how. She described her own response, read aloud in court: "I'm not asking that you take her life." She described her unsolved-homicide searches. The two devices lost on a Florida trip. The ChatGPT screenshots she allegedly sent Flynn the night before Ashley was found — with instructions on how to erase them. In January 2026, Botner gave Flynn an ultimatum. His alleged message back the night of February 15: "I choose you. I'm free. Actions will come tomorrow." By the next morning, Ashley Flynn — a middle school volleyball coach and mother of two — was shot twice while sleeping in Tipp City. Flynn is charged with aggravated murder, murder, felonious assault, and tampering with evidence. He's pleaded not guilty. After Ashley was found, Botner testified that Flynn pulled her aside and said something that made her heart start pounding. She didn't call anyone. She deleted messages between them. She lied to the FBI when they came four days later. She didn't tell the truth until February 26. Botner is not charged. No immunity deal. No search of her apartment, her vehicle, or her DNA. The prosecution put her on the stand as their witness. The question she left there isn't about Flynn's guilt. It's about what she believed was going to happen — and whether she helped it along.

More from American Monster: The Trial Of Caleb Flynn
Alleigha Botner lost a laptop and a phone during the period surrounding Ashley Flynn's murder. On Homicide Happy Hour, former thirty-year pastor Timmy Gibson and Tony broke down what they both believe was actually happening. Botner thought she'd found the person God intended for her. She believed Flynn was going to divorce Ashley. She was young, raised in the faith, and claims she was a virgin before Flynn. Gibson says the lost devices look terrible in hindsight but probably reflect a woman preparing for a custody battle, not a murder. Flynn was convicted on all nine counts and sentenced to life without parole. Gibson's larger point is that the Bible teaches your primary debt after wrongdoing is to God, not to the person you harmed. When Flynn told the courtroom "God is my judge," that was the system working as designed. Gibson says Flynn will never confess. A former evangelical pastor who served for thirty years says what happened on Caleb Flynn's worship team is not unusual. Timmy Gibson says it happened in every church he ever worked at. Either the senior pastor, the youth pastor, the worship leader, or someone on the team was involved with someone they shouldn't have been. Flynn was convicted on all nine counts in the murder of his wife Ashley and sentenced to life without parole. He led worship while sending over a hundred thousand texts to a fellow team member. Gibson personally knew Ted Haggard before the scandal that ended his career and recognized the same split between stage persona and private life. On Homicide Happy Hour, Gibson offered a read that reframes Flynn's emotional displays at church. He says the affair pulled Flynn closer to God, because the evangelical system treats sin as proof you need God more. Caleb Flynn’s case has moved from a guilty verdict to an appeal. A jury convicted him on nine counts, and he was sentenced to life without parole for Ashley Flynn’s killing. Patrick Mulligan filed the notice of appeal and asked the court to appoint new counsel. He has disputed the evidence of prior calculation and design and identified issues involving jury instructions and venue. The questions did not end with the verdict. Alleigha Botner testified about more than 100,000 messages exchanged with Flynn, including a message she wrote saying she wanted Ashley dead. She also described deleting messages on the morning of Ashley’s death and initially misleading federal investigators about the relationship. The defense challenged the scope of the investigation, including the lack of certain searches and the limited surveillance evidence at a Vandalia property where Botner was house-sitting. The footage tracked a car, rather than conclusively identifying the driver. The jury nevertheless convicted Flynn after hearing the evidence presented at trial. Robin Dreeke joins Tony Brueski to answer listener questions about the investigation, the appeal, and what the next stage could mean for Ashley’s family. Botner has not been charged in this case. Flynn maintains that he did not kill his wife. The appellate court’s job is to decide whether a reversible legal error occurred, not to conduct a new investigation. Botner's texts outnumbered Caleb Flynn's by more than two to one out of 107,000 total. She wrote I want to kill her. She searched how to erase their conversations. She deleted her own messages the morning Ashley died. She lied to the FBI the first time they called. Seven or eight agencies worked this case. None of them searched her home, collected her DNA, or ran a Flock camera. Her alibi is a car parked in a driveway caught on a neighbor's camera. Not her. The car. Flynn was arrested three days after the 911 call. Listener questions land where the defense's closing argument landed: on the gaps investigators left open and the one person whose documented texts said exactly what happened to Ashley. His defense attorney filed the appeal and said his firm was finished with the case. He asked the court to appoint a public defender. The notice challenges the venue ruling and jury instructions from Judge Pratt. The stated ground is that prosecutors did not prove prior calculation and design. Flynn told the courtroom he did not kill Ashley. Listener questions press on every piece of it: the venue motion the defense raised but dropped, the appeal argument that does not match the defendant's own claim, why the lawyer who sat through every day of trial handed it off two days later, and what happens to Ashley's family and two daughters if the appeal works and the evidence plays in a courtroom again.
