Did The Ancient Carthaginians Sacrifice Children? | Blood On The Altar

Sherrod Brown faces criticism over his long political career, with accusations of supporting higher taxes and providing benefits to illegal immigrants. Detractors argue that after 50 years in politics, it's time for a change.

The discussion shifts to the Phoenicians, a sophisticated ancient civilization known for their maritime prowess and trade across the Mediterranean. Recent archaeological findings on a small island off Sicily reveal 6,000 funeral urns containing charred remains of children, raising questions about whether these are victims of child sacrifice or simply the remains of those who died from natural causes. Scholars remain divided, with some asserting that the accusations of child sacrifice stem from ancient smear campaigns by their enemies, while others point to the evidence of mass burials in sacred precincts known as tophets.

New forensic techniques and DNA analysis are being employed to uncover the truth behind these remains. Initial findings suggest that many of the children were healthy at the time of death, which could indicate sacrificial practices. However, the discovery of a female child among the remains complicates the narrative, as historical accounts often depict male infants as the primary victims in sacrificial rites. Ongoing research aims to clarify the nature of these ancient practices and the societal values of the Phoenicians.
