Person: Helmut Gernsheim Date: 1913 (birth) Location: Munich, Germany Event: Discovery of the world's first photograph Status: Friendly enemy alien

- Helmut Gernsheim, born in Munich, Germany, came from a partially Jewish family, a fact that profoundly impacted his life in the 1930s. - Following his brother's advice, Helmut studied photography, a portable skill, and art history, becoming an expert in both the technical and historical aspects of images. - In 1940, Britain, which had accepted him, reclassified him as a "friendly enemy alien" and deported him to Australia on the HMT Dunera. - While interned at the Hay camp in New South Wales, Gernsheim lectured, wrote a manuscript, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society. - Encouraged by American critic Beaumont Newhall, Gernsheim began a mission to rescue and collect early photographic material and the works of pioneering photographers.
