Mentioned In Dispatches S14 E10 ~ Wargame Awards
"Mentioned In Dispatches" with the Armchair DragoonsShow Notes
4 April 2025 ~ Rocky and Mike and Brant do their best to muddle through a discussion around why we do/n’t care about wargame awards, what’s wrong with popularity contests, and how you would design the “right” kinds of wargame awards. We certainly don’t discuss all of the possible awards out there, and we don’t do a deep dive on each of them, but we try to cover a variety of ways in which these different awards approach their categories, participation, scope, and scale. So what did we miss? What awards didn’t we cover that we should have? How would you organize a set of wargaming awards – categories, voters, scope & scale – if you were going to do so? Sound off below! Here’s a bunch of links to some of the wargame awards discussed on the show
The Charles S Roberts Awards Wargames Illustrated Awards (reader survey) Golden Geek Awards SDHISTCON Summit Award The Homo Ludens Golden Luddite announcement Origins Awards archive Tabletop Games Blog (for the interesting category names) History on the Table Awards (from a few years ago on BGG, their own site seems to be messed up)
And this was from the question we asked at the end of 2024 about your wargame-acquisition decision-making And we also asked whether or not awards had any bearing on purchase decisions.
We love your feedback, over on the iTunes page for our podcast or on Spotify, or even Amazon or Castro, drop us a rating and let us know what you think. Thanks!

23 October 2026 ~ Mike & Brant are joined by Aaron & Rocky to collectively tell you how awesome the Fall Assembly is and why you should join us next year. What did we play? Did we survive the tornado warning? How’d the raffle go? We were making new friends, sinking new ships, zapping new enemies, and trying new restaurants in the same weekend that we dusted off 40- and 50-year-old games and welcomed 14-year-old gamers. See you next year?
16 October 2026 ~ Bill & Mike both attended the September weekend of American Revolutionary War gaming in Camden, SC. This weekend was sponsored by GMT Games and built primarily around Mark Miklos’ Battles of the American Revolution series (although other games were played, too). Battlefield tours, cannon fire, wargaming tournaments, Justegarde, and more! Kick back and enjoy the shortest episode of our podcast in 17 seasons. Key links!
9 October 2026 ~ Brant is joined by Drew & Cole Wehrle, of Buried Giant Studios, for a rambling chat about their plans & development processes, plus alt-histories, convention booths, and more Some links to things we discussed:
2 October 2026 ~ Brant is joined by Elizabeth Hargrave and David Thompson to talk about the TTGDA and what it can do for game designers and publishers. There’s discussion of contracts (and contract shenanigans!) and professional development and designers’ rights and a bit on AI. We get a couple of war stories and some discussion on payments & royalties, how to engage with the TTGDA, and more.
25 September 2026 ~ They’re back! Liz from Beyond Solitaire joins Brant & Mike to talk about the past 4 years of the solo wargaming survey as well as a few thoughts about the 2026 iteration. What have we learned? What do we want to change going forward? What are some of those burning questions that we just won’t get answered in a survey like this? When is Liz going to schedule and hold her co-working “SoloGameCon” on Discord? All this and more, tonight on BIIIIIIIIG-PODCAST!
