Your Life Is Happening Now - Is Your Career Affecting it?

Show Notes

What if the biggest career risk isn’t leaving - but staying too long? So many people feel trapped in jobs they no longer enjoy because they’ve invested years, built up benefits, earned seniority, or are holding on for a pension. Walking away can feel like throwing away everything they’ve worked for. But there’s another side of the equation we don’t talk about nearly enough: What is staying costing you? In this episode of Fuller Expectations, Carrie explores the hidden price of remaining in a chronically stressful or unfulfilling job - from the toll it can take on your physical and emotional health to the way work stress follows you home and affects your relationships, energy, sleep, and overall quality of life. This isn’t about recklessly quitting your job or ignoring financial realities. It’s about challenging the belief that longevity means you’re stuck. We’ll talk about the “golden handcuffs” of salary, benefits and pensions; the sunk-cost trap of thinking you’ve invested too much to leave; and how to begin exploring what else might be possible without handing in your resignation tomorrow. Because changing careers at 45, 50, 55 or even 60 isn’t necessarily starting over. You’re starting again, but with experience. Your retirement matters. Your financial future matters. But so does the life you’re living today!

What if some of the most challenging chapters of your life were actually preparing you for something greater? In this heartfelt, funny, and nostalgic episode of Fuller Expectations, I'm joined by my lifelong friends Julie and Tina. We've known each other since we were teenagers, and after decades of friendship, we've learned that hindsight really does have a way of changing our perspective. Together, we reflect on the jobs we couldn't wait to leave, relationships that taught us unexpected lessons, decisions we questioned, and experiences that helped shape the women we've become. We explore how life's disappointments, detours, and uncomfortable moments often provide the very lessons we need for the next chapter - even when we can't recognize their value at the time. Whether you're 40, 50, 60, or beyond, this conversation is a reminder that no experience has to be wasted, growth doesn't have an expiration date, and sometimes the greatest gift of getting older is finally understanding what our younger selves couldn't. Because life doesn't always make sense looking forward. Sometimes the lessons only become clear when we look back!

The holidays are a season of giving, but sometimes we find ourselves buying gifts simply because we feel like we’re supposed to. What if, instead of asking, “What can I buy for the person who already has everything?” we asked, “What could I give because of them?” In this episode of Fuller Expectations, we’re rethinking holiday giving and exploring ways to make it more meaningful. From donating to a cause close to someone’s heart, to supporting a local family in need, creating a family giving tradition, honoring someone we’ve lost, or giving experiences and time instead of more “stuff,” there are so many ways to make our holiday dollars matter. This isn’t about giving up the joy of presents... it’s about letting go of obligation and choosing intention instead. Because sometimes the most meaningful gift under the tree isn’t something that can be wrapped at all. And this year, I’m challenging you to try the One Gift Challenge: choose just one person on your list who already has enough and give something meaningful in their honor instead. One small change could make someone else’s holiday - and make yours - a little more meaningful, too!

What if the life you’re living right now is trying to teach you something? In this episode of Fuller Expectations, we explore purpose, intention, intuition, and the idea of cause and effect - the seeds we plant through our choices, habits, relationships, and the things we choose to tolerate. We’ll talk about that inner voice that sometimes knows what’s right for us before our minds are ready to admit it, why the same lessons can keep showing up in different forms, and one of the most freeing truths we can embrace: you are allowed to change your mind! So many of us spend years living according to other people’s expectations, afraid that choosing differently will disappoint someone. But what happens when constantly trying not to disappoint others means disappointing yourself? And if you’re struggling right now, remember, what’s in front of you today is only one small piece of your life. This chapter is not your whole story! Maybe finding your purpose isn’t about having your entire life figured out. Maybe it starts with paying attention to what you already know deep inside - and having the courage to plant a different seed if that is what your core is trying to tell you.

Have you ever had so much to do that you somehow end up doing…nothing? Sometimes what looks like laziness isn’t laziness at all - it’s overwhelm. After returning from international travel, battling a seven-hour time difference, jumping back into work, and staring at a desk and to-do list that seemed to have multiplied while I was gone, I found myself feeling completely stuck. Then I came across a quote from Jules Renard: “Laziness is nothing more than the habit of resting before you get tired.” It made me laugh—but it also made me think! It was in front of me for a reason! In this episode of Fuller Expectations, we’re talking about the difference between being lazy, genuinely needing rest, and simply being overwhelmed by everything demanding our attention. I’ll share a philosophy I’ve used with my teams for years: do what you should do today, then get up tomorrow and do it again. You don’t have to conquer the entire mountain at once. We’ll talk about breaking intimidating goals and endless to-do lists into manageable steps, choosing what actually matters today, creating momentum when you feel frozen, and giving yourself permission to rest when rest is what you truly need. Because progress doesn’t always come from giant leaps. Sometimes it’s one email, one phone call, one workout, one cleared-off corner of the desk - or one small decision to begin. You don’t have to do everything today. You just have to do today!

Change rarely happens overnight - even when it looks that way from the outside. In this episode of Fuller Expectations, we’re talking about the invisible journey that often happens long before someone makes a major change in their life. Whether it’s leaving a relationship, changing careers, ending a friendship, setting new boundaries, or simply becoming a different version of yourself, the people around us usually see the decision...but they don’t see everything that came before it. We’re often quick to judge someone else’s timeline. Too fast. Too soon. Why now? Why didn’t they wait? But the truth is, we don’t know what happens behind closed doors. We don’t know how long someone has struggled, grieved, questioned, tried, or quietly prepared themselves to move forward. And sometimes, when other people have a hard time accepting our change, it’s because they’re just beginning to process something we’ve already spent months - or even years—working through. This episode is a reminder that there is no universal timeline for change, healing, reinvention, or moving forward. The goal isn’t to move quickly or slowly. The goal is to move when you’re ready. Because people may see the moment you changed your life - but they didn’t see how long it took you to get there.
