Deep Dive into Foxe's Book of Martyrs by John Foxe - Persecutions of the French Protestants in the South of France
Following the 1814 restoration of the French monarchy, the Protestant population in southern France, particularly in Nismes, endured severe religious persecution, violence, and systematic pillage by Catholic royalist mobs. Despite initial hopes for peace, religious differences dictated public life, leading to the destruction of homes, brutal murders, and horrific public abuses that went largely unpunished by local authorities. Even when government officials and foreign powers, such as Great Britain, attempted to intervene, victims continued to face hostility, false accusations, and institutional discrimination. Eventually, the Protestants resolved to organize and fight back in self-defense, which successfully compelled their attackers to back down and helped restore a measure of safety to the region.
