Did you know the word ใœใ‚“ใœใ‚“ (Zenzen) is actually one of the easiest Japanese words to use incorrectly? Traditionally, zenzen is paired with a negative ending: ใœใ‚“ใœใ‚“ ใŠใ„ใ—ใ ใชใ„ (Zenzen oishiku nai) = Completely not delicious. (This is the โ€œcorrectโ€ textbook rule!) But in everyday modern conversation, native speakers totally mix it with positive words: ใ“ใฎใ‚ฑใƒผใ‚ญใ€ใœใ‚“ใœใ‚“ ใŠใ„ใ—ใ„๏ผ (Kono keiki, zenzen oishii!) = This cake is totally delicious! Languages evolve, so this modern usage isnโ€™t โ€œwrongโ€ Itโ€™s just casual! However, if youโ€™re in a business setting or talking to someone of higher status, stick with ใจใฆใ‚‚ (totemo) to play it safe: ใจใฆใ‚‚ ใŠใ„ใ—ใ„ ใงใ™ (Totemo oishii desu) = It is very delicious. What about you? Do you catch yourself using the positive zenzen? Let me know in the comments! ๐Ÿ‘‡ Save this for your next Japanese study session! ใพใŸใญ๏ผ
