The Johnstone Podcast Ep 1 - Filmmaker Matt Hicks

The Johnstone Podcast

Show Notes

In late 2025, I interviewed Cambridge Filmmaker Matt Hicks about his film ‘The Tavern’ for the Cambridge Museums Voices of Cambridge Oral-History Archive. I didn’t get all the info I needed, so recently, Matt and I met outside the Clements. The swankiest gig in town, the Clements used to be The Masonic, a notorious dive that provided the inspiration for the film. Once we were done we hopped into his car and spent two hours driving around town talking about all sorts of things. The hardest thing about episode one - editing it down to 58 minutes.

Seeking perspectives on death grief, god, the afterlife and assisted dying for the most recent series of Hospice Waikato’s Last Breath podcast, I asked several people if they would agree to an interview and among them was the general manger of Free FM Phil Grey. As with Gary Verberne the week before last, my conversation with Phil starts with death and quietly morphs into a discerning treatise about how to be a decent human being.
