He was rumored to have predicted the storms that thwarted the Spanish Armada, though historical evidence suggests he was not in England at the time. His reputation as a magician grew posthumously, overshadowing his legitimate scientific work and leading to a perception of him as a sorcerer rather than a scholar.
Dee's life took a tumultuous turn as he delved deeper into the occult, particularly through his partnership with Edward Kelly, who claimed to communicate with angels. Their collaboration led to controversial practices, including a bizarre directive to share their wives, which ultimately strained their relationship. Dee's later years were marked by personal loss and a decline in influence, culminating in his death in poverty in 1609. His contributions to navigation and science, however, remain significant, despite the overshadowing tales of wizardry that define his historical image.
