đŁ Beware the Fisherman
Join us for another Mild Mannered Supermen deep dive as we explore three of Tony Banksâ most revealing songs from the Duke era: âHeathaze,â âCul-De-Sac,â and âEvidence of Autumn.â
After spending our previous episode inside the story of the Duke Suite, this time we step into Tony Banksâ world â a much more introspective place filled with distance, nostalgia, uncertainty, and the feeling that life may be moving faster than you are.
In âHeathaze,â we hear a narrator who seems disconnected from the world around him, almost watching life through a veil. âCul-De-Sacâ takes that feeling even further, confronting obsolescence, adaptation, and the fear that the road youâre on may no longer lead anywhere. And in âEvidence of Autumn,â one of the great Genesis non-album tracks of the era, Tony turns toward memory, change, and the unmistakable sense that another season of life is slipping away.
We also put these songs in the context of what was happening around Tony Banks at the time. While Phil Collins was going through the marital crisis that would shape his songwriting for years, Tonyâs personal life was comparatively stable. He was married, a relatively new father, and had just come through the intensely creative period that produced his first solo album, A Curious Feeling.
At the same time, Genesis itself was changing dramatically. The band was becoming more direct, rhythmic, and accessible, and Tonyâs elaborate, keyboard-driven writing was beginning to sit alongside a very different kind of Genesis song.
So were these simply three beautifully melancholic Tony Banks compositions â or do they reveal something deeper about a songwriter watching both his life and his band enter a new phase?
In this episode we discuss the lyrics, arrangements, keyboard work, emotional themes, and the fascinating tension between Tony Banksâ classic progressive instincts and the new Genesis that was emerging in 1980.
