Editor's Note: We recommend checking out our VALIS Incident episode to get extra insight into the subject matter before diving into this one.
We have dedicated this episode to the memory of Phil's good friend and fellow writer Radell Faraday Nelson 1931-2022. R.I.P.
Greetings, PKD fans. David Gill joins the usual DickHeads back to discuss PKD's religious mystery novel VALIS. Horselover Fat is on a quest to find out why a pink laser beam of pure knowledge entered his brain one day and now he has strange visions and preternatural knowledge of events around him. Is Horselover a genius or a madman? Has his Rhipidon Society really found the trail to the messiah? We attempt to figure it all out. Plus: Langhorne visits a chocolate factory. Gonad Kid. And navel-gazing with Sigmund Freud.

More from DickHeads Podcast
Hello Dickheads. We're back with Humpty Dumpty in Oakland. When Jim Fergesson receives a windfall after he sells his garage, things are looking up for him. Unfortunately, things aren't so bright for Al Miller. Join us as we discuss this early straight novel from PKD. Plus: Barney's Debut. Not that Bob Ross. And Umbilical Powers.
The acclaimed horror novelist and Radio Free Albemuth playwright Lisa Morton joins the DickHeads for the final published science fiction novel we have to cover. Radio Free Albemuth is part autobiography, part VALIS mythology, and part rough draft. Most of all, it is pure PKD. Plus: Riffing on the Royal Portable. Fappers. And making groovy sandwiches.
Hello fellow DickHeads. Yes, we are back. No, Langhorne is not dead yet. And this time, it's another straight novel, In Milton Lumky Territory. Another trunk piece published shortly after his untimely death. Here, he tells the story of young Bruce, his attempt to make it as a salesman in the Pacific Northwest, and the typewriters that would plague his dreams. Plus: Dope-ass symphonies. Neurotic fever dreams. And The highlife in Cincinnati.
Hello PKD fans. We're back with the next straight novel written early in PKD's career but published after his death. This is an interesting take on an extramarital affair. We are joined by PKD collector and scholar Frank Hollander to discuss this odd semi-autobiographical effort. Plus: Relatively long. Paul Giamatti. And Swimming with Sharks.
Hello PKD fans. A land deal goes south, and someone has to take the fall. Revenge is the name of the game in this cat-and-cat thriller set in a small coastal town in Northern California. Who will win the neighborhood, their pride, and possibly even the water company in this battle of wits—even more importantly—what do three DickHeads think of all this? Plus: Wackadooey. Maybe it's because I'm simple. And keep it Barney.
