Delphi: Lost Tips. Erased Interviews. Buried Leads. They All Moved One Direction.
True Crime Today | Daily True Crime News & InterviewsShow Notes
Richard Allen is serving a hundred and thirty years for the murders of Abby Williams and Libby German in Delphi, Indiana. He was convicted on a single unfired bullet, his own statement that he was on the trail, and more than sixty confessions made during thirteen months of solitary confinement. No DNA. No fingerprints. No blood. No witness who saw him harm anyone. Everyone the defense says the evidence pointed to walks free. This complete four-part docu-series traces the Delphi investigation from February 2017 to the 2026 appellate arguments — every lead the system lost and the case it built from what was left. A tip marked "Cleared" by an unknown person and forgotten in a drawer for five years. A composite sketch that ran for two years before police said it was the wrong face. An FBI warrant on the property owner — probable cause sworn under oath — sealed and shelved. Early interviews erased by a malfunctioning recording system and never reconstructed. A catfish account that communicated with Libby German and went unannounced for four years. A hundred-and-thirty-six-page defense filing naming men with alleged confessions, crime scene connections, and a car with dried blood — all excluded from trial. A CVS pharmacy clerk with no criminal record put into maximum-security solitary confinement, documented in psychosis within six months, and convicted on the words he said while his mind was falling apart. And a judge who made every exclusion ruling and then did something after the verdict — before the appeal could reach her courtroom — that this series examines. On September 21, 2026, an appellate judge told Indiana: "You protected him into psychosis." Three judges are now reading the briefs. No deadline has been set. Sandra Birchmore was a child in a police youth program when officers allegedly began targeting her. She was twelve or thirteen years old. The program had no meaningful oversight or background checks on the officers who ran it. Years later, when Sandra was found dead, local investigators treated Matthew Farwell — the man now charged with her murder — as a colleague, not a suspect. He wasn't interrogated on camera. Building surveillance allegedly placed him at her apartment during the critical window. No one sought a warrant. The case was ruled self-inflicted and closed. The FBI had to take the case because local law enforcement wouldn't investigate its own officers. Other officers — Robert Devine and William Farwell — have been named in the alleged conduct but face no federal charges. The same investigative bodies here overlap with those in the Karen Read case. The federal trial is underway, but it targets one man. The department that gave its officers unsupervised access to a child remains intact. The chief who exposed three Stoughton officers in 2022 is on paid leave, and so is the town manager she's suing. Former prosecutor Eric Faddis joins me to sort out the Donna McNamara fight and what it means for the Sandra Birchmore case. McNamara's lawsuit says Thomas Calter told her to resign or be fired three months before Matthew Farwell's trial, and that she was punished for working with federal investigators. Calter denies that. The lawsuit also says Calter called a second Birchmore report a hit piece and pushed her to destroy it. Calter says he never asked her to touch any Birchmore report. Firefighters and public works unions voted no confidence in Calter. Eric explains whether McNamara can prove retaliation, and why federal investigators might want that report. The FBI told the jury Matthew Farwell ordered Sandra Birchmore to delete their texts multiple times. On October 22, three women who had affairs with him testified he never asked them to delete anything, never wore a mask, and never hid from his own wife at a party. The defense says the mask was about hiding an affair, and every one of those affairs ended before COVID. Jason Pickard, the Army recruiter who fathered Sandra's baby, testified under immunity that she named Farwell as the father every time he asked. She also sent him the January 24, 2021 text about Farwell asking for a key and looking through her closet. On cross, the defense asked whether he'd told the FBI that Sandra talked about suicide. His answer: "It looks that way." A State Police scientist testified Farwell's DNA was on the strap and not under Sandra's nails. Sandra Birchmore was found dead in her Canton apartment in February 2021, and local investigators called it suicide. Former prosecutor Eric Faddis joins me to break down the testimony that now has the investigation itself on trial. Prosecutors say Matthew Farwell, a Stoughton detective, was caught on camera entering her building in a mask that night. State troopers questioned him in a school parking lot. A State Police examiner found nothing on his phone and gave it back. The Norfolk District Attorney declined charges based on the suicide ruling. Now Stoughton's former deputy chief has testified he saw the lobby footage online, like his chief. Eric explains the difference between a sloppy investigation and a protected one, and which side of that line this case falls on. Matthew Farwell faces life in prison if a federal jury finds he killed Sandra Birchmore to stop her from reporting him. Former prosecutor Eric Faddis lays out the evidence the defense has to get past. According to prosecutors, Farwell met Sandra through the Stoughton police youth program when she was a teenager and the relationship began when she was 15. They say she was pregnant and believed he was the father when she died in February 2021. DNA later showed he wasn't, but prosecutors say Farwell thought he was. The government says his DNA was on the strap found with her body, that he was on camera in a mask that night, and that he deleted their messages. His lawyers say Sandra was upset because he was ending it. Eric explains why the motive question could decide this case.
