Lost in the Dark: The Crash of Aeroperu 603

Green Dot Aviation

Summary

Aero Peru Flight 603 tragically crashed into the Pacific Ocean shortly after takeoff from Lima, Peru, on October 2, 1996, resulting in the loss of all 70 people on board. The Boeing 757, piloted by experienced Captain Eric Schreiber and First Officer David Fernandez, encountered a critical failure of its altimeters, which displayed zero altitude despite the aircraft being airborne. This malfunction left the pilots without reliable information about their altitude or speed as they flew into cloud cover at night.

As the flight progressed, the pilots received a series of contradictory warnings, including overspeed and stall alerts, which further complicated their decision-making. Despite attempts to troubleshoot the situation and return to the airport, the crew was misled by faulty instruments and incorrect altitude readings. Ultimately, the aircraft descended too low over the ocean, and the pilots were unable to recover before impacting the water at high speed.

Investigations revealed that the crash was primarily caused by tape covering the static ports, which prevented the aircraft's sensors from accurately measuring altitude and speed. The mechanic responsible for the oversight was convicted of negligent homicide, and the incident prompted significant changes in pilot training protocols. The airline, Air Peru, went bankrupt shortly after the crash, and Boeing faced legal repercussions for inadequate pilot training related to such emergencies.
