The Art of Maths

Gresham College

Show Notes

Mathematics and art are more similar than is commonly thought. Each is concerned with the process of being highly creative with abstract objects and of producing everlasting work of great aesthetic beauty. Uploaded 11-06-26Early art inspired by geometry, symmetry, numbers and algebra will be considered, as will the role maths played in the art of the Renaissance. Mathematics' influence on other artistic forms will be explored, taking us up to the work of Escher and how this inspired the study of Fractals.A lecture by Chris Budd 10 MarchThe transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/art-of-mathsGresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. When Thomas Sprat's The History of the Royal-Society of London appeared in 1667, it was less a history than a manifesto for the future, designed to convince Charles II that experimental research was a worthwhile investment. Uploaded 10-06-26Focusing on experiment and travel, this lecture describes the aims and activities of the early Royal Society almost two centuries before the word 'scientist' was invented. As Sprat made clear, science, imperialism and finance were inextricably linked.A lecture by Dr Patricia Fara, Clare College Cambridge 8 October 2019The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/1667-royal-societyGresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. Beyond the Solar System, all astronomers have to work with is the light that falls to the Earth from distant cosmic objects. Newer, larger telescopes are always needed to boost scientific progress, and the next generation of facilities - whether the 42m diameter optical-infrared Extremely Large Telescope, or the Square Kilometre Array of radio dishes - will represent a huge advance. We shall look at the science driving the need for such large telescopes, through history and to the present-day and beyond. Many scientific and engineering challenges are involved in the design and construction of the largest telescopes and their mirrors, and technological developments will be essential to their success.Uploaded 06-06-12The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website:http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/large-telescopes-and-why-we-need-themGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. Is the NHS medieval? Is this an insulting claim to make? Insulting to modern hospitals or those of the Middle Ages?Uploaded 31-08-11Professor William Ayliffe considers modern health reform from the perspective of Tudor medical practice. He provides an overview of some of London's most important mediveval hospitals, including St Bartholomew's, St Thomas' and St Mary's Bethlem, and compares our own healthcare systems with those of the Tudors, in terms of cleanliness, dignity to patients and even hospital architecture. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the full conference's page on the Gresham College website:http://www.gresham.ac.uk/http%3A/%252Fwww.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/tudor-health-reformGresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597.
