#408 Biblical or Cultish? Examining the "Anointed Man" Church Leadership Model
The Alisa Childers PodcastShow Notes
What does the Bible actually teach about church leadership—and what happens when a pastor is treated as “God’s anointed man” whose board exists to strengthen his hand rather than hold him accountable?
In this episode, I respond to anepisode of the Resurge podcast hosted by pastors Josh Howerton and Josh McPherson, in which they lay out their vision for building a “wartime church.” I compare their model of leadership with the New Testament qualifications and responsibilities of elders and deacons, Jesus’ teaching on servant leadership, and the biblical warnings against domineering leadership.
I also explains why I connected aspects of their leadership model with the New Apostolic Reformation and address criticism that I should have handled my concerns privately under Matthew 18.
Rather than asking you take my word for it, I encourage Christians to listen to the full context, open their Bibles, and ask a crucial question: Is this how the New Testament describes leadership in Christ’s church?

Decades ago, Christian philosopher and apologist Francis Schaeffer warned that evangelical Christianity was heading toward what he called “The Great Evangelical Disaster.” He believed that as Christians increasingly accommodated the spirit of the age, compromised biblical authority, and abandoned objective truth, the consequences would be devastating. Looking at the church today, was Schaeffer right?
