Weekly Challenge: "The Mirror Check"

This week, pay close attention to the animals or children in your immediate environment. Because they live entirely in the present moment, they act as immediate bio-feedback for our central nervous systems. When an animal changes their behavior around you, or if you feel a flash of irritation/anxiety, stop and do a quick body scan. Ask yourself: What is my body holding right now that they are reflecting back to me? Drop out of your head, take a deep belly breath, and allow that suppressed energy to move through you instead of stuffing it down into your own "obscurus."

Discussion:

Science and Spirituality Integration and Tension

The participants discussed the historical separation and current convergence of science and spirituality. Savannah noted that historically, everything was attributed to magic or the will of gods, but over time, society separated spirituality from science to better understand the world. Now, with advances in quantum physics, science is catching up to spiritual concepts, and both speakers agreed that belief systems are often a matter of personal resonance rather than objective truth. They highlighted the tension in the American South, where religious beliefs can clash with practices like yoga and meditation, sometimes being labeled as 'devil's work.' Both agreed that finding a personal middle ground and focusing on what resonates individually is key, and that language and cultural context play a significant role in misunderstandings between science and spirituality.

Animals as Mirrors and Emotional Healers

A major theme was the role of animals in reflecting human emotions and aiding in healing. Dallas explained that animals, especially horses, act as mirrors for human emotions and can help people reconnect with their bodies and feelings. Both agreed that animals are sensitive to human energy and can reveal subconscious patterns, such as boundaries and attachment styles. Savannah shared personal anecdotes about her dogs mirroring family members' personalities and discussed her lack of connection with horses due to childhood trauma. Dallas emphasized that animal behavior often reflects their environment and treatment, advocating for relationship-based rather than punishment-based training. The conversation also touched on how children, like animals, live in the present and can teach adults to do the same.

Emotional Regulation, Shadow Work, and Societal Suppression

The discussion delved into emotional regulation, the importance of acknowledging and processing emotions, and the concept of shadow work. Savannah used the Harry Potter 'obscurus' analogy to illustrate how suppressed emotions can become destructive if not addressed. Both speakers agreed that society, especially in the U.S., discourages emotional expression, particularly in men, leading to issues like anger and emotional dysregulation. They discussed the stigma around shadow work, with Savannah emphasizing that everyone has both light and dark aspects, and that suppression leads to shame and further problems. Dallas added that black (darkness) is not inherently bad and can represent protection. They also discussed the challenges of teaching emotional regulation to children and the ripple effect it can have on communities.

Community, Connection, and Societal Structures

The speakers explored the importance of community, the effects of societal division, and the need for collective healing. Dallas referenced a Native American quote about fear-based culture and highlighted the resurgence of community and sisterhood, especially among women. Savannah discussed how American culture emphasizes individualism, leading to isolation in grief and hardship, and contrasted this with communal grieving practices in other cultures. Both agreed that hurt people hurt others, and that love, acceptance, and community are fundamental human needs. They also discussed the challenges of building
