The Adventures of Philip Marlowe - "The Deep Shadow" (Old Time Radio, 1950)
The Adventures Of Philip Marlowe | Old Time RadioSummary
Harvey Kettering seeks the help of private detective Philip Marlowe to find his missing fiancée, Shirley Doyle, just hours before their wedding. Kettering reveals that Shirley had been acting strangely the night before, leaving a nightclub abruptly and later disappearing without a trace. Marlowe investigates, discovering a note left by Shirley that hints at a meeting with a mysterious figure named Francis Dragato.
As Marlowe delves deeper, he learns that Eddie Shaft, the owner of the nightclub where Shirley was last seen, has been murdered, and a significant sum of money is missing. The investigation leads Marlowe to Corky Netherlands, a singer at the Blue Chip nightclub, who reveals that Eddie had entrusted her with the cash to keep it safe. Tension escalates when Marlowe encounters a woman with a southern accent who threatens him and is connected to Shirley's disappearance.
The case takes a dramatic turn when Marlowe uncovers that Shirley is actually Francis Dragato, who has been living under an alias. After a confrontation involving Shirley and another woman, Norma Maeda, who is implicated in Eddie's murder, the truth comes to light. The story concludes with Kettering and Shirley planning to marry, despite the dark shadows of their pasts, while Marlowe reflects on the pervasive influence of crime and the struggles of those caught in its web.
