God in the Pain

Show Notes

Where's God when life hurts? That question has echoed through hospital rooms, gravesides, sleepless nights for as long as people have suffered. But the truth of the gospel is this – suffering is not the absence of God.

In 1940, British nurse Edith Appleton served on the front lines of WWII. Her diary tells of nights spent holding dying soldiers, their blood on her hands, their last words in her ears.

"The pain of these boys breaks my heart", she wrote, "but somehow it brings me nearer to all that is good and real." In the middle of unimaginable suffering, she glimpsed compassion – not the absence of God, but the echo of Him.

We assume that when life hurts, God must be missing. But what if the opposite is true? What if the deepest pain is where Jesus is nearest – not watching from afar, but walking right beside you?

Because He knew suffering: betrayal by friends, exhaustion, loneliness, hunger, grief, and finally crucifixion itself.

Isaiah 53:4-5 The fact is, it was our suffering he took on himself; he bore our pain. But we thought that God was punishing him, that God was beating him for something he did. But he was being punished for what we did. He was crushed because of our guilt. He took the punishment we deserved, and this brought us peace.

Jesus didn't avoid human suffering – He embraced it, so that when you suffer, He can meet you there with understanding, not condemnation.

So when you cry, He remembers His own tears. When you ache, He recalls His own wounds.

Suffering isn't the absence of God. It's often the place where His compassion is most alive. Because the One who once suffered for you, now walks with you – until every pain finally gives way to glory.

That's God's Word. Fresh … for you … today.
