The Courthouse Box That Time and Town Tried to Bury
A rusted wooden box labeled "CARTER - RESTRICTED, CLERK'S USE ONLY" sat perfectly dry on a courthouse basement ledge after two floods, defying physics and six decades of deliberate erasure by a small Ohio town. Who sealed it, why it was hidden, and what it proves about the removal of a family from the public record are questions that only opening the box can answer.
In this episode, we tell how a meter reader's routine walk on July 9, 1994 led to the discovery, and how a graduate student's archival work over six years pieced together a pattern of systematic removal in Harwick - culminating in the mystery of what Vernon Pike hid before his death and why the Carters vanished from town memory.
