Summary
Rabbi Pinchas Taylor, director of the American Faith Coalition, discusses his newly published book, "One Nation Under God: A Jewish Guide to American Politics and Patriotism," which explores the historical connections between Jewish values and American founding principles. The book is divided into two main sections: the first focuses on American history through a Jewish lens, while the second addresses contemporary political issues.
Taylor expresses his long-standing interest in American history, particularly its ties to the Hebrew Bible. He argues that the Hebrew Bible significantly influenced the founding of America, shaping its legal and moral frameworks. He highlights the roles of Jewish individuals and traditions in key historical moments, such as Columbus's voyages and the establishment of Thanksgiving, illustrating how Jewish thought permeated early American society.
In the latter part of the book, Taylor tackles various contentious topics, including abortion, racism, and immigration, aiming to present the Torah's perspective on these issues. He emphasizes the importance of understanding these subjects independently of political affiliations, advocating for a return to foundational Jewish values as a guiding principle for contemporary society. Taylor's work seeks to bridge the gap between Jewish teachings and American ideals, encouraging a dialogue that respects both traditions.
