Sandra Birchmore, Gypsy Rose and Lori Vallow's Niece: Whose Words Count?
The Murder Of Sandra BirchmoreShow Notes
On October 23rd, Matthew Farwell's lawyer used Sandra Birchmore's own words to tell a jury she took her own life: a 2020 Facebook message, notes of a depressed mood, the medicine she'd just started. Her therapist answered that Sandra was worried about her apartment the day before she died, eight days after texting that Farwell asked for a key and looked in her closet. Robin Dreeke and I put Sandra's case next to two others. Gypsy Rose says she's sure Ken Urker's death wasn't suicide, before toxicology is back. Lori Vallow's niece Melani says she knew nothing about the shot at Brandon Boudreaux, though a filing says she believed he had to die for the Lord's plan. Sandra's trial resumes Monday, October 26th. More from The Murder Of Sandra Birchmore
After Matthew Farwell's visit on January 23rd, 2021, Sandra Birchmore texted friends that he had asked for a key to her apartment and looked in her closet. On January 31st, she told her therapist she was afraid something would happen to her there. Robin Dreeke and I talk through what came out in court on October 23rd: Farwell's lawyer using a 2020 Facebook message to argue Sandra was suicidal, the FDA warning on the medicine she'd finally agreed to take, and a therapist who says Sandra never once expressed a suicidal thought in five years. That therapist told jurors the State Police never contacted her after Sandra's death was ruled a suicide. We also talk about Sandra's last session, where she described her late mother at the end of her bed, and why the defense ended the day on it. Matthew Farwell's twin brother, former Stoughton officer William Farwell, took the stand in the Sandra Birchmore trial on October 26, 2026, and admitted under immunity that he was with Sandra while on duty. He told the jury he asked for immunity because he could be charged for that conduct. He said it happened in his police cruiser, in her car and at the house she shared with her aunt, starting in the summer of 2018, when she was 20 or 21. A trooper testified earlier that State Police questioned both twins in parking lots in February 2021, with no recording and no notes. Matthew admitted he'd been inside Sandra's apartment the night she was last seen and said he went to break up with her. The supervisor at both interviews answered the medical examiner's office before her suicide ruling. I lay out what that doctor told jurors, and what prosecutors allege happened that night. In the Sandra Birchmore case, the federal trial is underway, the autopsy evidence has no documented parallels, and the FBI found over 32,000 texts state police never recovered — but the department that placed Sandra in a police youth program with unsupervised officers when she was twelve has never been formally investigated. In Lindsay Clancy's case, the DA won't say whether he's retrying her after an 11-to-1 jury sided with the defense. The holdout juror had an active restraining order during the trial. Patrick has forgiven Lindsay, remarried, and is starting over. In the Anna Kepner case, Timothy Hudson's defense says one unresolved issue is blocking his plea decision but won't identify it. The trial has been postponed three times. His own family refused to take him back. Three different cases where the evidence is on the table and the person or institution that should answer won't. Sandra was twelve or thirteen years old when Stoughton's police explorer program placed her in a room with adult officers who had unchecked access to vulnerable minors. There were no meaningful background checks. No oversight. Multiple officers allegedly used that access for years. Matthew Farwell is the only one facing federal charges, and those charges are for murder — not for what allegedly happened to Sandra starting when she was a child. Robert Devine and William Farwell have been named in the broader pattern of alleged conduct. Neither has been federally indicted. When Sandra died, Farwell wasn't treated as a suspect by local investigators. He wasn't put on camera. The case was closed as self-inflicted without a warrant. The FBI took over because local law enforcement protected its own. The same DA's office appears in the Karen Read case. If Farwell is convicted, the accountability question starts — not ends — with him. The program that gave officers access to Sandra still existed when she died. In her final therapy session, on January 31st, 2021, Sandra Birchmore described a visit from her mother, who had died in 2016. Therapist Diala Alkhalil told the jury in the Matthew Farwell trial on October 23rd that it frightened Sandra, and that it came up after Sandra said she feared for her safety in her Canton apartment. Prosecutors say Farwell strangled Sandra there the next day to keep her from reporting him to federal investigators, and Farwell has pleaded not guilty. Alkhalil said she screened Sandra for suicidal thoughts every session and never heard one, and that she had to call the State Police herself. Friend Lindsey Crean said the pregnancy made Sandra happier than she'd been since her mother died. Defense lawyer Joanne Daley's last questions of the day were about that visit, including whether it was a hallucination. Alkhalil is back on the stand Monday, October 26th.
