In this episode of The Bible Show, Sam and Will walk through the Beatitudes in Matthew 5:1-12, the opening of Jesus' most famous sermon, the Sermon on the Mount. They explain what "blessed" (makarios) truly means in the Bible and why it is far deeper than material happiness or good circumstances. Each Beatitude is unpacked as part of a progression of spiritual growth, starting with recognizing your spiritual bankruptcy and building toward mercy, purity, peacemaking, and enduring persecution. The episode reveals how Jesus preaching from a mountain parallels Moses receiving the law at Sinai, and how the seven mountains of Matthew form a deliberate chiastic pattern. They also show how the Beatitudes in Matthew 5 are mirrored by the Woes against the Pharisees in Matthew 23. Whether you are just beginning your faith journey or have followed Jesus for years, the Beatitudes invite you to drop the pretense and come to God with empty hands.
