Show Notes

In this new episode of How Could We?, recorded in front of the LDC’s delegation office during COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, Anne-Sophie Garrigou interviews Binyam Gebreyes, diplomacy lead at IIED (International Institute for Environment and Development), where he supports the Least Developed Countries (LDC) group.Binyam's role ensures that LDC priorities and needs are amplified throughout the COP negotiations. In this conversation, Binyam talks about the power dynamics that shape climate negotiations, highlighting the challenges faced by LDCs in these spaces. He discusses the importance of the LDC group’scollective approach to counteract the influence of larger, more powerful nations, and how strategic engagement through high-level dialogue and early communications helps elevate their voice. Binyam also explains the significant progress made on the loss and damage agenda, where the LDC group has beenpushing for tangible financial solutions to address climate impacts that are no longer preventable or adaptable. Binyam also talks about the lessons he’s drawn from his work on the LDC Initiative for Effective Adaptation and Resilience (LIFE AR), highlighting the need for programmatic, community-led adaptation solutions that reduce transaction costs and allow local communities to own and drive their own adaptation strategies. This episode provides insights into the role of LDCs at COP29 and their ongoing fight for climate justice in the face of systemic power imbalances.Visit the IIED website: iied.orgVisit climate-kic.org and reach out to us at [email protected] with any questions. This episode was presented and produced by Anne-Sophie Garrigou.

The world is on track to overshoot 1.5°C, potentially reaching 1.8°C or higher. For a doctor who has spent her career in disaster zones, those numbers translate into real consequences for people’s lives. In this episode, Christa Beck sits down with Dr. Jemilah Mahmood, an internationally renowned physician, humanitarian, and Executive Director of the Sunway Centre for Planetary Health, at Impact Week in Singapore. Jemilah left humanitarian work because responding to one crisis after another wasn't fixing what caused them. Now she's co-designing the Global Tipping Points Conference in Kuala Lumpur, betting that positive tipping points can be just as unstoppable as the ones pushing us toward collapse. We also cover:Why health workers, among the most trusted people in the world, may be climate's most underused advocates How Asia produces many of the world's positive tipping points while the science behind them is still little known there Why preparing for a warmer world means rethinking how we live with nature The one change Jemilah would make tomorrow, and why it starts with the age of the people in charge

Climate experts have spent decades getting the evidence right, but many still can't explain their work at their own dinner table. Better information was supposed to move the world. Instead, it’s built an echo chamber. In this episode, Christa Beck and Seth Armstrong-Twigg are joined by Leo Horn-Phathanothai, founder of Bangkok Climate Action Week. After more than 20 years working in climate policy and research, Leo began questioning whether better information alone was enough to drive change. His answer is radical inclusion – or, creating space for artists, youth, indigenous leaders and others outside the traditional climate bubble to reclaim their agency and an active role in the movement. We also cover:Why the region’s young population creates a powerful opportunity for people-powered climate action How one energy expert had his first climate conversation with his family in 20 years, through his wife's art collective and his son's school Why Southeast Asia's energy transition is moving forward on pure economics while global headlines report a retreat How Bangkok Climate Action Week connects grassroots climate action with the World Bank and IMF meetings

In this season of the podcast, we’re asking: How Could We? Transform our food systems so they nourish people and regenerate our planetary systems.Host Anne-Sophie Garrigou is joined this week by farmer Sheila Darmos from the southern Peloponnese in Greece. Sheila inherited one of Greece's first organic farms - The Southern Lights Farm - and completely reinvented it.Anne-Sophie is also joined on this episode by Climate KIC’s Laurène Lebelt, who is working on HarvRESt, an EU-funded project testing ways to integrate renewable energy sources into farms. In this episode, Sheila talks about why she returned to Greece after many years away, how her farm helps tackle ‘ecological and social desertification’ occurring across the Mediterranean, how her farm performs is also an educational site offering community living and why she was keen to create networks connecting regenerative farmers across Greece and Europe.Laurène outlines what integrated landscape management means, how solar panels, wind turbines, or biogas systems can reshape farming landscapes, diversify farmer incomes, and connect food production with energy transition as well as the importance of bringing diverse stakeholders together, such as farmers, conservationists, energy developers, government and community members.—This episode was presented and produced by Anne-Sophie Garrigou and co-produced by Bárbara Mendes-Jorge.Climate KIC is Europe’s leading climate innovation agency and community.
