What is “wellness” anyways after three years of genocide, the ever expanding security state, and mounting fascism with no material pushback from the “opposition party?” As midterms mania deprives us of our sanity, reactionaries are already apologizing for democratic politicians who are starting to walk back their anti-establishment rhetoric before they are even in office. We are stuck grappling with the possibility there is no voting our way out of any of this and the lives our parents promised us might not actually pan out. So let’s have a little chat. Today we are joined by the Burqas and Beer Podcast, hosted by Afghan-Angeleno social worker Madina Warkdak and fellow Angelino social worker Kyna Wise, a podcast where two two millennial mental health professionals unpack the world, one slightly-chaotic conversation at a time. From decolonizing wellness to raging about the news, they cover politics, culture, identity, and the awkward art of existing—all from the cozy dysfunction of their walk-in closet.
