Show Notes

This week on WKC Spill The Tea, we’re joined by psychotherapist, feminist thinker and author Jennifer Cox to discuss Anger and her ground-breaking book, Women Are Angry, named The Times Self-Help Book of the Year 2024. For generations, women have been conditioned to stay quiet, be agreeable and not make a fuss. But suppressed anger doesn’t disappear it manifests as burnout, anxiety, depression and physical symptoms. Jennifer draws on decades of clinical experience to explore how rage is often a rational response to inequality, injustice and the emotional labour placed on women. In this episode, we explore: • The moment Jennifer knew this book had to be written • The patterns she repeatedly saw in the therapy room • Why rage rooms are booming and why 90% of customers are women • How to tell the difference between depression, burnout and anger • The “small” daily frustrations that accumulate into something much bigger • How suppressed anger shows up in women’s bodies and mental health We also discuss what’s making us personally angry right now including the corruption of water companies in England after watching Channel 4’s Dirty Business, and how this impacts us here in the South West. Stick around for our 'Thought for the Week, beautifully inspired by our guest, Jen, to carry you through the week, plus all the usual warmth, honesty and shenanigans you’ve come to expect from WKC. If you’ve ever wondered whether you’re exhausted… or just done this episode is for you.

Midlife pivots, HRT patch glue and building Nudi spray, with Amy Simpson Link to Order Our Best Selling Book: Tackling Gender Bias in The Healthcare System. What Patient stories Teach Us About Implementing Systemic Change: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tackling-Gender-Bias-Healthcare-System/dp/1805018817 This week we spill the tea with Amy Simpson, a midlife entrepreneur and co-founder of Nudi Spray. She wasn't looking to start a business. She was just sick of scrubbing glue marks off her skin every time she peeled off an HRT patch. A dancer turned florist turned entrepreneur, Amy shares what it actually takes to pivot in midlife, and why you don't need to feel "business-shaped" to build something that works. In this episode we ask Amy: How did your dancing career start, and what was touring life like? Any favourite celeb stories? Was stepping back from dancing to raise your family a difficult decision? How did your eye for design develop through the florist and visual merchandising chapters? What was your own experience of menopause, and what was the moment the HRT patch glue became "there has to be a better way"? What did the learning curve look like when you're not a "business-shaped person", and what's been the hardest part of building a business from scratch? What did the Davina McCall call mean for you? What's it been like watching Nudi spread through word of mouth and social, and what's next? We are still on a high from our book launch, we talk a bit more about that and Jinty has found some interesting research on placenta’s and an erection after prostate cancer…! Stick around for some beautiful inspiration to carry you through the week.

Link to Order Our Best Selling Book: Tackling Gender Bias in The Healthcare System. What Patient stories Teach Us About Implementing Systemic Change: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tackling-Gender-Bias-Healthcare-System/dp/1805018817 Today we are Spilling the Tea with Dr. Ravi Gill, a health psychologist who has spent over 15 years helping people navigate anxiety, depression and the mental load of physical health conditions, from early intervention services to older adult NHS care. She also trains organisations on mental health awareness and crisis management, and volunteers supporting people in emotional distress. Today we're talking anxiety: what it is, what it feels like, and why perimenopause can turn the volume up. In this episode: 1. What anxiety actually is: generalised anxiety vs "normal" worry, and the line between everyday stress and something that needs support. 2. What anxiety feels like in the body and where people notice it first. Many women are thought to have cardiac or gut issues when it's anxiety (or vice versa), so how can we tell the difference? 3. What’s happening in the brain when we're anxious, and why anxiety latches onto specific worries like health, money and relationships even when it's really about something broader. 4. Perimenopause and anxiety: why anxiety can appear for the first time, or come back with a vengeance. 5. What to do in the moment when anxiety spikes, plus the go-to grounding techniques Ravi actually recommends. 6. What does real progress looks like, whether anxiety can be managed long term, and when to see your GP rather than self-manage.

Today we're spilling the tea on how AI is affecting women, work, and happiness. Our guest is Giselle Goodwin, a self-help author, former business owner, and the woman behind Can Women Really Have It All? A Happiness Handbook for Working Mothers. But don't let the "self-help" label fool you, Giselle's approach isn't about "finding your inner goddess." It's honest, it's grounded in research, and it's backed by a PhD in women, work and wellbeing that she went back to university to complete after twenty years of running her own businesses. She's spent years asking one deceptively simple question: how can life actually be better for women? In this episode we talk about: • The "having it all" myth, the promise the 1980s sold women, and whether it ever delivered • How flexibility, hybrid working and micro-shifting can quietly become a trap for women at work • The basics of how AI is already affecting women's jobs, and which sectors are most at risk • Why AI's gender bias matters from AI safety and regulation to non-consensual AI-generated images of women and girls • Why Giselle calls the impact of AI on women the next "she-demic," and how worried we should be • The domestic gap nobody talks about and the research showing that when men do more at home, women are less depressed, arguments drop, and divorce risk halves • The three things Giselle would change tomorrow in policy, culture and technology to make work genuinely work for women
