What if the world's oldest monument wasn't built to worship โ€” but to warn?

In this episode, we investigate Gรถbekli Tepe โ€” a site in southeastern Turkey built twelve thousand years ago by hunter-gatherers who had no cities, no agriculture, and no writing. It shouldn't exist. And yet it does. Carved into its limestone pillars is a composition that some researchers believe is the oldest astronomical record in human history โ€” a date stamp pointing to the moment a comet struck the Earth and reset civilisation. Then, at some point, the builders deliberately filled each enclosure with rubble and sealed it โ€” one by one, over centuries. Nobody knows why.

Settle in, get comfortable, and drift off while we explore the echoes of the ancient world.

This week's community shout out โœจ I'm listening to the fascinating The History of China podcast ๐Ÿ‘‰ Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0tjXbW77IfKeg5dolEfdcW Website: http://thehistoryofchina.wordpress.com ___ In October 1992, an earthquake struck just south of Cairo. More than five hundred people died, whole villages of mud-brick came down, and old minarets dropped rubble into the streets. A few kilometres away, a building that was already more than four thousand years old shrugged off what may have been a single stone. It had done the same in 1847, in 1754 and in 1303. So what is it about the Great Pyramid that the ground has never been able to break? Settle in, get comfortable, and drift off while we explore one of the ancient world's most interesting mysteries.

The head looks like it was set down on a much larger animal, a body seventy-three meters long under a face that seems almost too modest for it. Nearly everyone who has studied the statue agrees that something about its proportions is unusual. Almost no one agrees on why.

The builders had no compass. They had no pole star either: the sky they looked at held only an empty patch of darkness at the center of its turning. And no Egyptian text from the age of the pyramids explains how they found north.

Above them sit five more chambers, roofed with still more granite. All of it was cut in a quarry nearly nine hundred kilometers away. No Old Kingdom text describes how any of it was lifted into place, and the answer is still being argued over today.
