Pregnancy Nutrition: What Dads Need to Know

Fatherhood in Focus

Show Notes

Food becomes more than fuel during pregnancy. It becomes foundation. And your role as a dad isn’t to police what she eats. It’s to create the environment that helps her feel supported, nourished and understood. If she’s tired, nauseous, overwhelmed and you’re still living off crisps and “whatever’s in the fridge”… You’re not making it easier.

This is what we're focusing on in this episode

How dads can support pregnancy nutrition without being controlling Why your habits shape the household environment What foods are commonly avoided during pregnancy Why hydration matters for energy, mood and digestion How morning sickness and cravings change food choices Flexible meal planning for pregnancy Why nutrition habits now carry into early fatherhood

Why It Matters to You as a Dad This isn’t about becoming a nutritionist. It’s about leadership at home. The way you shop, cook, snack and plan either supports her or makes the pregnancy harder. Your habits set the tone. And the environment you build now affects your partner’s comfort, your baby’s development and the family habits you’ll carry into parenthood.

This is where you can step up

Stock the house with food she can actually eat Check current NHS guidance instead of guessing Keep meals simple, balanced and flexible Batch cook and freeze meals before energy dips Lead by example with your own food habits

If this hit home, don’t stop here. Episode 4 focused on emotional support and the invisible load. This episode gets practical: how you shape the food environment around her. Your children know you as Dad. But do they actually know you? Modern fatherhood can easily become a constant list of responsibilities: work, school runs, activities, homework, meals, problems and keeping the family moving. And somewhere inside all that usefulness, the man underneath Dad can quietly disappear. In Episode 72 of Answer Me This, I explore what it means to let our children know who we really are without asking them to carry adult problems that were never theirs to hold. What You’ll Learn

Ambition is not the enemy. But what happens when the future starts getting more of you than your family does? As dads, we want to provide, build, protect and create opportunities for our children. But sometimes the chase for a better future slowly takes us away from the very people we say we are doing it for. In Episode 71 of Answer Me This, I ask one of the hardest questions ambitious fathers need to answer. What You’ll Learn

What if the behaviour you're trying to stop is actually your child trying to tell you something? When our children answer back, push boundaries, refuse, shout or demand control, it's easy to move straight into correction mode. But sometimes behaviour is the signal, not the whole story. This week, I look at one of the hardest challenges I've faced with my eldest son: understanding the difference between behaviour that needs correcting and behaviour that may be asking for connection. You finish work. But has work finished with you? Because your children don't see the deadline, difficult conversation or financial pressure you're carrying. They simply experience the Dad who walks through the door. In this episode of Answer Me This, I'm exploring one of the hardest transitions in modern fatherhood: moving from the pressures of work, ambition and responsibility into the emotional presence our families need from us. Modern fatherhood asks men to provide, protect, parent, support, communicate, lead and stay present. But what is all that pressure doing to us? Because our children don't only inherit what we intentionally teach them. They also inherit the patterns we've never faced ourselves. What You'll Learn
