Liberation, Leadership and the Work of "Un Otro Mundo Posible"

Show Notes

You’re about to hear a conversation about leadership. Today’s guest, Dr. Annmarie Caño, is an expert in leadership. Dr. Caño draws on her 25-year career in higher education — and her love of Ignatian spirituality — in her work today as a writer, speaker and executive coach who helps higher education and social impact leaders enact personal and systemic change. She draws heavily on liberation theology, liberation psychology and the legacy of the Salvadoran martyrs in her work and her personal reflections. And she has a wonderful new book from Johns Hopkins University Press called “Leading Toward Liberation: How to Build Cultures of Thriving in Higher Education.”

But what today’s host, Eric Clayton, continues to find so compelling about his conversation with Annmarie is the fact of where they met: She attended a conference that the Jesuit Media Lab co-hosted on the Catholic imagination and speculative storying. Why? It wasn’t because she’s a burgeoning fantasy author — though they do talk a bit about Tolkien in today’s conversation. No — she attended that conference because she sees as foundational to her mission the work of bringing to life un otro mundo posible — or an “other” possible world. Quite literally, Dr. Caño is thinking about leadership as the creation of other realities, other ways of living, and she is concerned about ensuring that everyone — particularly those often forgotten by society — have a seat at the table.

As much as Eric loves talking about Middle-earth and Narnia, he was even more excited to get to talk about what it might look like to build new worlds in our actual, real lives — and to consider the real people that can helped in so doing.

A great lesser-known Martin Luther King, Jr., quote is “that before you’ve finished eating breakfast in the morning, you’ve depended on more than half the world.” It’s even truer today than when Dr. King spoke the line during his Christmas sermon in 1967. Think of the millions of unseen hands that worked to bring you your toothpaste, your smartphone, your shoes, your clean running water, your toast, your cup of coffee.

In Rome, Ignatius and his companions endure accusations, obtain public vindication and begin works of spiritual and practical service that anticipate the Society of Jesus. Da Câmara closes the story by tracing the Spiritual Exercises to Ignatius’ own experiences and describing how, through the years, he grew ever more able to find God in every moment.

There aren’t many people on Earth more famous than the Pope. It can be easy to think that there’s not much new to learn about a person with that level of fame. But we think you’ll learn something on literally every page of a new biography of Pope Leo XIV, which is titled “American Pope: Leo XIV’s Road from the South Side of Chicago to Vatican City.”

After returning briefly to his homeland to recover, teach and settle unfinished matters, Ignatius travels to Venice to rejoin his companions. When war prevents them from sailing to Jerusalem, they serve, preach and prepare for priesthood until their pilgrimage is redirected toward Rome, strengthened by Ignatius’ profound experience of being placed with Christ.
