Amazon has announced it will sell Trainium AI chips directly to third-party data centers beginning late 2027 — ending the captive AWS-only model and placing Amazon in direct structural competition with Nvidia for the first time at the hardware layer. Nvidia currently controls between 81 and 90 percent of the global AI accelerator market. That dominance now has a credible challenger.

Trainium2 already delivers roughly 30 percent better price-performance than comparable Nvidia GPUs. Trainium3 pushes that advantage another 30–40 percent further — and uniquely, it arrives battle-tested at scale inside AWS infrastructure on real production workloads. The tradeoff: Trainium3 is fully committed pre-launch and the external sales window opens 15-plus months from now, leaving meaningful room for Nvidia to respond.

The AWS financial picture sharpens the urgency. AWS posted 39.3 percent year-over-year revenue growth in Q3 — its fastest in five years — with $46B in quarterly revenue and a $578B contracted backlog. CEO Andy Jassy confirmed that even $220B in annual capex isn't enough to meet demand. The implication for enterprise buyers is stark: AI infrastructure is now a resource you contract for in advance, not a commodity you discount-negotiate.

On the safety research front, a Meta and Carnegie Mellon University collaboration produced SimpleLoRIF — a gradient-based filtering method that reduced GCG jailbreak success rates by 22 percent across Qwen, Llama, and OLMo model families, flagging that safety degradation during fine-tuning often originates from seemingly benign data, not overtly harmful content.

Rounding out the briefing: Amazon expanded Alexa's AI shopping capabilities to over 100 new features, with agentic feature usage up eightfold year-to-date.
