Show Notes

Grace Ping, the child-running star who became a global sensation after she set multiple age group world records, including breaking 16.30 in the 5k, all before 14. Grace, now aged 21, joins the podcast to fill us in with what happens after you start your journey from the very top. In an ideal world she would have continued on this trajectory, but in her own words “ It doesn’t always happen that way”. Following on from her initial golden years, Grace encountered a number of injuries and setbacks which set her firmly on the ‘scenic route’. However, after many years of challenge, as a testament to both her strength of character and mindset, Grace has pulled through and found her way to a healthy, happy, and successful place. Grace talks about a range of topics including the impact of early success on confidence, perfectionism, injuries, the power of nutrition, family, team, and running as a collegiate athlete. There is a lot which can be learned through this episode with regard to facing adversity and using self-awarness to harness your strengths and reframe your areas of development.

Gretta and Honor Morton are twins, who love running and both have dreams of competing internationally for GB. But there is more to their dreams. They are campaigning for equality on and off the track for deaf athletes, with Honor herself being a deaf athlete. The twins want to help bridge the deaf world and the hearing world together as they believe with the right approach and understanding, this is possible which is something they show through their joint reflections around Honor’s experience with being deaf. Having been born at 28 weeks they may not have been written on paper, onto a trajectory for such high success, but through this episode the twins demonstrate the power of mindset and support systems as they show whatthey have achieved together despite the different challenges they have faced. Honor was recently selected for her first GB vest at the European Youth Deaf Games in Germany next year, which the twins plan to vlog to shed light onto the deafathlete experience. In the episode they demonstrate how many additional challenges Honor has had to overcome as a deaf athlete, including the lack of funding and attention given to deaf athletes, with deafness not being a category at the Paralympic games, excluding deaf athletes from the world stage of Paralympic sport. Gretta talks about her experience in the world of sprinting, as a multiple times county champion, TSO, and U Perform athlete. She shares her own challenges with episodic non-diabetic Hypoglycaemia contributing to performance dips and plateaus as a result of puberty in girls, and her reflections around the deaf athlete experience from her point of view, as Honors twin. Gretta and Honor show exceptional maturity, and, as a testament to how they have navigated and reflected upon their experiences, they are able to bring wisdom beyond their years to this episode. The twins have an incredible bond which is evident in the way they talk and provides a heart-warming undertone to the whole episode. Lots to think about and learn from in this fantastic episode, which will leave you feeling nothing but inspired and motivated.
