Summary
The discussion centers around the perception of marathon running as an achievement in today's society. With the increasing number of people completing marathons, some question whether the accomplishment retains its significance. The hosts emphasize that despite the growing accessibility of marathons, the physical and mental challenges involved in training and completing one should not be underestimated. They argue that every runner's journey is unique, and the effort required to prepare for a marathon is commendable, regardless of the individual's speed or experience.
The conversation also touches on the rise of ultra-running and how it may contribute to the perception that marathons are less impressive. The hosts acknowledge that while ultra-marathons present new challenges, the marathon remains a significant milestone for many runners. They encourage listeners to celebrate their achievements, whether it’s completing a marathon or a shorter race, and to recognize the dedication and commitment that goes into training for any distance. Ultimately, they assert that running a marathon is indeed an achievement worth celebrating.

Andy shares a full debrief after his first-ever trail race, the 2 Valleys Trail Race, over the weekend. 22km with over 400m of elevation meant Andy stepped completely out of his comfort zone, aiming to finish on the podium. Completely humbled, Andy battled through the rain and mud alongside professional trail runners. He learnt a lot along the way, which he tells Rick and Sarah all about in his full and honest debrief of one of the hardest races he’s ever done.
Both Sarah and Rick ran their respective half marathon and one-mile races in Copenhagen, spending most of their races in Zone 4. They take a look at what they could work on to improve their running economy, with the goal of running faster, using less effort, and becoming more efficient in their next training block and race. Andy feels a little left out with Sarah and Rick introducing new features over the last few weeks, so he decides to bring one of his own to the table… Andy’s Argument. It sparks a lively debate and uncovers one of Rick’s dark truths: he doesn’t log his warm-ups or cool-downs. Much to Sarah’s disgust!
