Hugh Newman of Megalithomania interviews Stuart Mason, author of The Long Man of Wilmington: Britain's Stonehenge of the East (2026). They discuss the mystery of archaeoastronomy and how the ancients aligned sites all across the planet, and then get into Stuart's latest discoveries of solstice and equinox alignments at the Long Man in Sussex. What he has found is as important as the solstice alignment of Stonehenge, as it marks a calendar throughout the solar year. Hugh and Stuart also discuss other sites that have a similar phenomenon, such as Karahan Tepe, Newgrange, and other ancient landscapes that incorporate this knowledge. Stuart Mason is a researcher, folklorist, author, and ancient landscape guide with over 30 years of experience studying archaeoastronomy and ancient cosmologies worldwide. His work focuses on lunar cycles, solstices, and long-term celestial patterns, and lived ion remote islands in the Pacific, where he learnt the indigenous systems of navigational astronomy. His focus now is on exploring how prehistoric monuments encode astronomical knowledge within mythic and ritual landscapes. Through field research, writing, and guided exploration, Stuart investigates the enduring relationship between land, sky, and sacred time. He spoke at Megalithomania in 2007, founded The Antiquarian Society in the same year, organised the Out of the Ordinary Festival in Sussex for many summers and his new book on the Long Man of Wilmington was launched at Megalithomania 2026. Paul Devereux is an author, researcher, lecturer, broadcaster, artist and photographer based in England. He is a co-founder of the academic publication Time & Mind – the Journal of Archaeology, Consciousness and Culture, a research associate with the Royal College of Art (2007-2013), and a Research Fellow with the International Consciousness Research Laboratories (ICRL) group at Princeton University. His work primarily deals with archaeological themes, especially archaeoacoustics (the study of sound at archaeological sites), the anthropology of consciousness (ancient and pre-modern worldviews), ecopsychology, unusual geophysical phenomena, and consciousness studies, spanning the range from academic to popular. Some of these apparently disparate topics merge in a few of his writings. He has written or co-written 28 books since 1979, and was the editor of the legendary Ley Hunter Magazine for 20 years.
