Virtuality

Show Notes

Neon signage, cybernetic augmentations, multi-colour holograms, clusters of projected billboards, dingy motels, low lives, sinister corporations, hustling mercs...and...oriental ‘othering’ that can be historicised in the post-war anxieties circling the U.S. economy in the 1980’s??? You guessed it — this weeks episode is all about the Cyberpunk genre and its prolific authors and adaptations, as well as the historical foregrounding of its trope-y narratives and visuals. The episode features: my poor excuse of sci-fi prose, a lesson on Techno-Orientalism (because I’m doing a presentation on it Friday afternoon), a special Webpage of the Week intro, and my fatigue-induced rambling (complaining) at the end that may or may not be cut by Arina since I low-key went overtime. This show was broadcast on OAR 105.4FM Dunedin - oar.org.nz and made thanks to the support of NZ on Air.

This weeks episode is a look into digital blackface — a newer concept based around the Internets usage of Black reaction images/GIFs. We talk about the history of minstrelsy, the prevalence of racialized visualizations and audios in the social media sphere, and how the past informs the present. This discussion is applied to a video essay I did for post-grad this year in which I offer the term “blacked” to analyse this online phenomenon. Despite the importance of this topic, don’t mind my bouts of stuttering and voice cracks — I was tired, okay?! This week’s episode is all about the niche community of Snapewives/Snapeists — a corner of the early 2000’s Harry Potter fandom that religiously engaged and transformed the narratives of Severus Snape.
