102 Minutes: The Timeline of the September 11 Attacks (Part 2)
At 8:19 a.m. on September 11, 2001, flight attendant Betty Ong placed a call from American Airlines Flight 11 to report a hijacking, providing the first critical details of an unfolding global tragedy. In the second instalment of our three-part series on the Militia Historia podcast, we chronicle the harrowing 102 minutes from the first impact to the fall of the second tower.
This episode provides a minute-by-minute breakdown of the four hijacked flights and the immediate emergency response. We explore the courageous actions of those aboard American Flight 11, United Flight 175, American Flight 77, and United Flight 93, including the passenger revolt that forced Flight 93 down in a Pennsylvania field, preventing a strike on the Capitol or the White House. On the ground, we examine the unprecedented challenges faced by the military's air defence sector, which scrambled fighters to intercept aircraft based on chaotic and delayed information.
Shifting to the World Trade Center, we detail the largest rescue operation in New York City's history. The episode covers the devastating structural impacts that rendered most stairwells impassable, the critical radio communication failures that plagued first responders, and the heroic efforts of the FDNY, NYPD, and Port Authority police that helped evacuate thousands of civilians before the towers collapsed. We honour the staggering human cost of the day, including the deaths of 2,977 people and the historic losses suffered by emergency response agencies.
