The Subtle Art of Saying Nothing

Knobs

Show Notes

Sometimes the most useful thing a producer can say in a session is nothing at all.

In the Season 2 opener of KNOBS, Simon Moro and Terry Hart explore the subtle art of saying nothing: when to keep your opinions to yourself so the artist can do their best work, and when a well-timed question does more than any instruction.

It starts with a lesson from the back of the room: a guitarist tapping in his delay time before every single take, and a producer who knew it made no technical difference but let the ritual stand anyway. From there the conversation covers why you let a singer get two or three takes in before giving notes, how to feed back one fix at a time, the headphone trick that can calm an over-pushed vocal without a word, and why asking "is that the best phrase into that line?" beats singing it for them.

They also get into the pre-production questions that get artists to open up, reading the hierarchy in a band so the quiet member's ideas get heard, a lesson from Michael Brauer's table in the south of France, and why silence matters just as much when you are quoting a project and talking budget.

Whether you're assisting in your first studio or running sessions of your own, this episode is a reminder that putting your ego aside usually gets the artist a better record, and one that is still theirs.

Topics covered:

• Rituals before the take, and when not to speak • Holding your notes for the first few takes • Vocal feedback one fix at a time • Asking instead of telling • Pre-production questions that open artists up • Band hierarchy and the quiet genius • Silence in sales and budget conversations • Competence, ego and having nothing to prove
