NRLW legend Ali Brigginshaw - Does the NRLW Need a New Medal + Rugby League World Cup Preview
The Run Home with Joel & FletchSummary
Ali Brigginshaw advocates for the establishment of a standalone award for female rugby league players, suggesting that the Women's Player of the Year should be named the Ali B medal. She expresses the need for recognition of women's achievements in the sport, emphasizing that it feels odd to hold a male trophy during award ceremonies. Brigginshaw also discusses the importance of standalone events for women's rugby, highlighting the benefits of allowing players to celebrate their victories with family and fans without the rush of concurrent events.
In discussing the Rugby League World Cup, Brigginshaw notes impressive performances from teams like Fiji and the PNG Orchids, which are gaining attention for their exciting gameplay. She reflects on the evolution of the women's game, mentioning the strength of the English women's team and the impact of the Super League on player development. Brigginshaw also shares her experiences of playing alongside talented athletes, naming Tameka Upton as a standout player and reminiscing about her long-time teammate Renee Kunt's contributions on the field.
Overall, Brigginshaw's insights highlight the growth of women's rugby league and the ongoing conversation about equity and recognition in the sport.
